  • Patent number: 5602191
Abstract: Radiation-curable acrylates are prepared by a process in which the hydroxy compound is reacted with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in a first stage and, in a second stage, the reaction product of the first stage is reacted with an epoxide compound in the presence of, as a catalyst, a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium compound of the general formula ##STR1## where X.sup.- is an opposite ion and R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 independently of one another are each C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 -alkyl which may be substituted by one or two phenyl groups or are each C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 -aryl which may be substituted by one or two C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl groups.

  • Patent number: 5516860
Abstract: Radiation-curable acrylates are prepared by a process in which, in a 1st stage, a hydroxy compound is reacted with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and, in or before a 2nd stage, the reaction product of the 1st stage is then reacted with an epoxy compound and compounds having one or more primary or secondary amino groups are added in the 2nd stage and the reaction in the 2nd stage is continued, after the addition of these compounds, until the acid number of the reaction mixture has decreased by at least 3 mg KOH/g of reaction mixture from the time of the addition of these compounds.

  • Patent number: 5496591
Abstract: Radiation-curable binders which are obtained by reactingA) an amine/formaldehyde condensate having a molar ratio of formaldehyde to amino groups of from 1:1 to 2:1 withB) one or more esters, having a free hydroxyl group, of acrylic acid or of methacrylic acid with polyalcohols which contain from two to four alcoholic hydroxyl groups, from 0.1 to 0.3 hydroxyl equivalent of component B) being used per methylol equivalent of component A),in the presence of a strong acid are suitable for use in coating materials.

  • Patent number: 5122582
Abstract: The preparation of copolymers which form clear aqueous solutions fromA) 45 to 90% by weight N-vinylpyrrolidone,B) 10 to 55% by weight of a vinyl ester andC) 0 to 10% by weight of other copolymerizable monomersby radical polymerization in an organic solvent in the presence of a radical initiator, and removal of the organic solvent and other volatiles by distillation, entails allowing the polymerization to proceed until the N-vinylpyrrolidone content in the reaction mixture is from 5 to 1% by weight of the N-vinylpyrrolidone amount employed, substantially removing the organic solvent and other volatiles by distillation, adding water to the mixture, again adding a radical initiator and leaving the aqueous solution at from 50.degree. to 100.degree. C. for from 1 to 10 hours, and then removing volatile organic constituents virtually completely by a steam distillation.
