Publication number: 20120120283Abstract: A smart-focusing technique includes identifying an object of interest, such as a face, in a digital image. A focus-generic classifier chain is applied that is trained to match both focused and unfocused faces and/or data from a face tracking module is accepted. Multiple focus-specific classifier chains are applied, including a first chain trained to match substantially out of focus faces, and a second chain trained to match slightly out of focus faces. Focus position is rapidly adjusted using a MEMS component.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 11, 2010Publication date: May 17, 2012Applicant: TESSERA TECHNOLOGIES IRELAND LIMITEDInventors: Adrian Capata, Stefan Petrescu, Petronel Bigioi, Peter Corcoran

Patent number: 8180173Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing defect correction in blurred images is disclosed. For one embodiment of the invention, a digital image is acquired. One or more candidate defect regions in the image are identified. The candidate defect regions are corrected and responsive to the image being blurred, the corrected regions of the image are blurred. For one embodiment of the invention, a digital image is acquired and one or more candidate eye defect regions in the image are identified. The candidate eye defect regions are corrected and if the image is blurred, the corrected regions of the image are blurred accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2007Date of Patent: May 15, 2012Assignee: DigitalOptics Corporation Europe LimitedInventors: Adrian Capata, Florin Nanu, Alexandru Drimbarean

Patent number: 8170294Abstract: A method for detecting redeye in a digital image comprises initially examining the image to detect redeyes, examining the image to detect face regions and, from the results of the preceding examinations, identifying those detected face regions each including only one detected redeye. Next, the identified face regions are examined, using less stringent search criteria than the initial examination, to detect additional redeyes in the face regions.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2007Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: DigitalOptics Corporation Europe LimitedInventors: Florin Nanu, Peter Corcoran, Adrian Capata, Alexandru Drimbarean, Eran Steinberg

Publication number: 20120069198Abstract: A technique involves distinguishing between foreground and background regions of a digital image of a scene. First and second images are captured of nominally a same scene. The first image is a relatively high resolution image taken with the foreground more in focus than the background, while the second image is a relatively low resolution reference image taken with the background more in focus than the foreground. Regions of the captured images are assigned as foreground or background. In accordance with the assigning, one or more processed images are rendered based on the first image or the second image, or both.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2011Publication date: March 22, 2012Applicant: Tessera Technologies Ireland LimitedInventors: Eran Steinberg, Petronel Bigioi, Adrian Zamfir, Alexandru Drimbarean, Peter Corcoran, Mihai Ciuc, Adrian Capata

Patent number: 8126265Abstract: A method for digital image eye artifact detection and correction include identifying one or more candidate red-eye defect regions in an acquired image. For one or more candidate red-eye regions, a seed pixels and/or a region of pixels having a high intensity value in the vicinity of the candidate red-eye region is identified. The shape, roundness or other eye-related characteristic of a combined hybrid region including the candidate red-eye region and the region of high intensity pixels is analyzed. Based on the analysis of the eye-related characteristic of the combined hybrid region, it is determined whether to apply flash artifact correction, including red eye correction of the candidate red-eye region and/or correction of the region of high intensity pixels.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2010Date of Patent: February 28, 2012Assignee: DigitalOptics Corporation Europe LimitedInventors: Mihai Ciuc, Adrian Capata, Florin Nanu, Eran Steinberg, Peter Corcoran

Publication number: 20110102643Abstract: A digital camera has an integral flash and stores and displays a digital image. Under certain conditions, a flash photograph taken with the camera may result in a red-eye phenomenon due to a reflection within an eye of a subject of the photograph. A digital apparatus has a red-eye filter which analyzes at least one partial face region identified within the digital image for the red-eye phenomenon and modifies the image to eliminate the red-eye phenomenon by changing the red area to black. The modification of the image is enabled when a photograph is taken under conditions indicative of the red-eye phenomenon. The modification is subject to anti-falsing analysis which further examines the area around the red-eye area for indicia of the eye of the subject. The detection and correction can be optimized for performance and quality by operating on subsample versions of the image when appropriate.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2010Publication date: May 5, 2011Applicant: TESSERA TECHNOLOGIES IRELAND LIMITEDInventors: Florin Nanu, Eran Steinberg, Peter Corcoran, Alexei Pososin, Petronel Bigioi, Alexandru Drimbarean, Stefan Petrescu, Mihnea Gangea, Adrian Capata, Mihai Ciuc, Adrian Zamfir
