  • Publication number: 20100082748
Abstract: Improving scalability and throughput in publish/subscribe messaging systems by allowing the spoke systems to vary the member of the hub collective that is attaches to. The scalability is improved because the spoke systems do not have to have a long lasting attachment to a specific hub system. Instead, the spoke systems can be redistributed more evenly when new spoke systems are added or removed. The throughput is increased by distributing workload and fan-out responsibilities within hub collectives. Availability is improved because single points of failure are removed. Ease of administration is also improved over a hierarchy by allowing child nodes to automatically change parent nodes if a parent node is modified or removed.

  • Publication number: 20090182574
Abstract: In a method of controlling a network of interconnected publish/subscribe message brokers for routing publications from a plurality of publishers to interested subscribers, each message broker is arranged to receive publications from publishers both directly and via other brokers and to receive subscriptions and unsubscriptions from subscribers and other brokers for publications meeting predefined criteria identified in the subscriptions or unsubscriptions. Each broker creates and manages a list correlating subscribers with the predefined criteria. It then matches received publications with the subscription list and forwards publications which match listed subscriptions which are in an active state to interested subscribers and interested other brokers in the list. Also, in response to received subscriptions and unsubscriptions, each broker generates and forwards proxy subscriptions and proxy unsubscriptions to other brokers. Each broker establishes a retention period for subscriptions.

  • Publication number: 20090090305
Abstract: A system that allows humans to interact with and send touch remotely to their pets. The system has a tangible interface for humans that allow both visual and tactile modes of communication on one end, and a haptic pet wearable jacket on the other end. It allows humans to interact remotely with pets even when they are not physically at the same place as the pets. On the tangible interface for humans, human views the real time movement of the pet in the form of a pet doll sitting on a mechanical positioning system. The movement of the actual pet is tracked using a web camera. The pet doll has embedded touch sensing circuit that senses and transmit data wirelessly to the computer. This touch data is sent across the Internet to another computer which is connected to the haptic pet wearable jacket. The real pet wears the pet jacket, which is able to reproduce the touching sensation via vibrating motors. The pet owner can tangibly touch the pet doll, sending touch signals to the pet in a remote location.

  • Patent number: 7421276
Abstract: According to an aspect of the present invention one or more radio units of a wireless device are used to measure or detect clues about the radio propagation environment and type of space that surrounds a wireless device. From the measurements, the wireless device may determine the type of location that it is located within, whether that is simply a determination between inside and outside or a more complex determination of the type of building or space that the wireless device is located within. In either case, this determination can be used to automatically change/adjust the radio system operation parameters the wireless device operates in accordance with. With the type of location determined, a wireless device may then automatically select the appropriate radio system operation parameters for the type of location that it is in and the corresponding regulations that apply.

  • Patent number: 7210411
Abstract: A round of ammunition for firing from a gun having a rifled barrel, especially a small arms weapon. The projectile (1) forming a part of the round is of steel or other material having a Vickers Hardness value not less than 550, and has a coating (13) of copper or copper alloy. The projectile has a forward body portion (9) which has a diameter similar to that of the lands of the rifling, and a rearward body portion (3) having a diameter which is similar to the diameter defined by the roots of the rifling grooves. The coating (13) is of a thickness not less than the depth of the said rifling grooves, so that the rifling engraves the coating but does not significantly engrave the underlying steel or other hard material. The advantages associated with a hard projectile material are thus obtained without substantially increasing barrel wear.

  • Patent number: 6807168
Abstract: A teleservice server in a wireless network provides an interface between a mobile station and an Internet protocol network thereby facilitating data transfers between these elements. The server translates datagrams from the IP network into a format suitable for transmission over a wireless network that provides voice communication capabilities. The server also translates data messages received from the mobile station over the wireless network into a format suitable for appropriate transmission in the IP network.

  • Publication number: 20040157645
Abstract: Systems and methods of operating an array antenna are disclosed. The array antenna has configurable beamwidth and is operable in any of multiple operating modes associated with respective beamwidths. For example, operating an array antenna at a wide beamwidth for detecting incoming communication signals reduces scan times associated with individually scanning directional antennas. Switching to narrow beamwidth operation for subsequent exchange of communication signals provides higher antenna gain and reduces interference. Steering of beams and nulls in a gain pattern of an array antenna further reduces interference on wireless communication links. The benefits of each beamwidth are thereby exploited for particular functions, while many of the drawbacks of each beamwidth for other functions are avoided.
