  • Publication number: 20090140961
Abstract: A reflective display device (2) comprises a plurality of controllable light absorption layers (8) arranged in a stack. Each of the layers (8) is capable of absorbing incident light in a specified wavelength band. A selective reflector (10) is immediately behind at least one of the layers (8) and is adapted to reflect at least some wavelengths of light within the wavelength band and substantially to transmit light of other wavelengths.

    Publication date: June 4, 2009
    Applicant: HEWLETT-PACKARD DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, L.P.
    Inventors: Adrian Geisow, Stephen Kitson
  • Publication number: 20080198281
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device comprises a layer of liquid crystal material (3) between spaced-apart cell walls (1,2), and electrodes (5) provided on at least one cell wall for applying an electric field across at least a part of said liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material has anisotropic light-absorbing particles dispersed therein and substantially aligned therewith. The invention also provides a composition for use in the display.

  • Publication number: 20070200979
Abstract: A colour display device comprises: a first display substrate (13) and a second display substrate (18), said substrates being spaced apart and opposed to each other; a layer of an electro-optic material (27) between the substrates; a set of first electrodes (17a) on an inner surface of the first display substrate (13) and a set of second electrodes (17b) on an inner surface of the second display substrate (18), the first electrodes (17a) overlapping the second electrodes (17b) to define pixels for selectively applying an electric field across at least some of said electro-optic material; a set of first colour filters (CY) on the first display substrate, each of said first electrodes being in register with one of said first colour filters; and a set of second colour filters (CM) on the second display substrate, each of said second electrodes being in register with one of said second colour filters.

  • Patent number: 7042057
Abstract: A process is described for fabricating an active addressing component such as a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) device by creating surface relief levels to form trenches, and depositing a metal in the trenches. The metal is anodized to create a non-linear dielectric. A second metal is deposited in the trenches to create an electrical with the dielectric which a contact is provided, and transferring the MIM device to a substrate by adhesive transfer.

    Filed: May 5, 2005
Date of Patent: May 9, 2006
    Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.

  • Publication number: 20050270461
Abstract: A liquid crystal device comprises a first cell wall and a second cell wall enclosing a layer of liquid crystal material. The device has electrodes for applying an electric field across at least some of the liquid crystal material, and a surface alignment structure on a region of a substantially planar inner surface of at least the first cell wall. The alignment structure induces the liquid crystal material to adopt a desired alignment in an azimuthal plane. The surface alignment structure comprises a two dimensional array of microstructures which are shaped and oriented to produce the desired alignment. Each microstructure has no plane of symmetry orthogonal to the azimuthal plane and to said planar inner surface.
