  • Publication number: 20080189141
Abstract: A method of managing the business of a health insurance plan, wherein the provider of such health insurance plan undertakes liability in return for a premium or contribution, and insures members who pay such premiums or make such contributions for covered health services or manages an account from which covered health care expenses are paid. The method includes calculating an amount of expenditure of a member using a credit or debit card issued to the member and increasing the amount of funds available to a member in a medical savings account to be used by the member to pay for health services or increasing the amount of liability the health insurance plan undertakes. The amount of the increase is a percentage of the amount of expenditure of the member using the credit or debit card issued to the member.

  • Publication number: 20050256748
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of managing a life insurance policy in which the life insurer receives a premium from an insured life and wherein if the insured life suffers an insured event, the life insurer pays a predetermined sum assured to the insured life or a beneficiary nominated by the insured life. The method includes defining a retirement age and when the insured life reaches the retirement age, paying at least one payment from the life insurer to the insured life. After the at least one payment the sum assured is reduced so that the amount which will be paid to the insured life or their nominated beneficiary in the event of them suffering an insured event in the future is reduced.

  • Publication number: 20050240449
Abstract: A method of managing the business of a life insurance scheme of the kind in which a life insurer receives life insurance premiums from an insured life and pays a predetermined sum to the insured life on the occurrence of an insured event. The life insurance scheme is linked to a medical scheme of the kind in which the provider of such medical scheme undertakes liability in return for a premium or contribution, the insured life being a member of the medical scheme. A portion of the life insurance premiums paid by the insured life during a predetermined period are allocated to a fund according to predetermined criteria related to the status of the insured life with the medical scheme. An amount is deducted from the balance of the fund related to life insurance claims made by the member during the predetermined period and at predetermined intervals, the balance in the fund is paid to the insured life.

  • Publication number: 20050222877
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of managing the business of a medical scheme wherein the provider of such medical scheme undertakes liability in return for a premium or contribution, and provides to members who pay such premiums or make such contributions, relevant health services, and/or assistance in defraying expenses incurred in connection with rendering such relevant health services. The improvement comprises in calculating a difference amount which is the amount of the premiums or contributions paid by a member to the medical scheme less the costs incurred on the member's behalf by the medical scheme. This difference amount is then accumulated in a health fund. At a predetermined point in time, if the balance in the health fund is positive, the member is paid out at least a portion of the balance in the health fund.

  • Publication number: 20050222878
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of managing the business of a medical scheme wherein the provider of such medical scheme undertakes liability in return for a premium or contribution, and provides to members who pay such premiums or make such contributions, relevant health services, and/or assistance in defraying expenses incurred in connection with rendering such relevant health services. The improvement comprises in the allocating of a portion of the premium or contribution paid by a member to provide the indemnity benefit and if the member suffers severe illness, disability or death, the member's future premium or contribution is paid on behalf of the member to the medical scheme for a period of time so that the provider of the medical scheme continues to undertake liability for the member and/or dependent's of the member for the period of time.

  • Publication number: 20040059608
Abstract: A method of calculating a premium payable by an insured person on a life insurance policy uses the amount of claims made from a health insurance plan of the insured person and information regarding the general well-being and/or lifestyle of the insured person to calculate the premium payable. The premium is calculated using a base percentage amount which is then either increased or decreased. If the insured person has made few claims to the health insurance plan and they have taken positive steps to look after their health, they will be rewarded by a relatively lower premium on their life insurance policy.

  • Publication number: 20040030625
Abstract: A method of managing an investment of a policyholder which corresponds to a sum assured is described. The invention has particular application to life insurance. The policyholder selects a basic sum assured, and a periodic basic premium corresponding to the basic sum assured is calculated. The basic sum assured is linked to one or more financial indices so that the value of the total sum assured increases or decreases with changes in the value of the indices. An additional premium is calculated based on the cost of the linking, and a composite periodic premium is calculated. By using derivative instruments, the policyholder's investment corresponds to the actual sum assured from inception of the policy, compared with conventional schemes which involve the periodic investment of the policyholder's contributions.

  • Publication number: 20020111827
Abstract: The method of the invention provides incentives for medical scheme members to minimize medical expenses both by responsible use of the benefits of the scheme, and also by offering positive incentives to members to adopt a healthy lifestyle and to make use of preventative procedures and pretreatment medical advice facilities. A number of health-related facilities and/or services (such as membership of health clubs, gymnasiums or fitness programs) are offered to the medical scheme members, and the members are allocated points for using these facilities. Members are also allocated points for using predetermined preventive medical procedures and medical advice services. Rewards are allocated to members based on their points accrued, and the reward may include a payback of premium payments.
