Abstract: A controller (101) is configured for the reading of so-called electronic “smart cards” which are configured to operate as a control template. The controller (101) is formed of a housing (102) incorporating a control template receptacle (104) and a viewing area (106). The receptacle (104) includes an access opening (110) through which a smart card (300) is insertable. An upper boundary of the viewing area (106) is defined by a sensor in the form of a substantially transparent pressure sensitive membrane (108). Arranged beneath the membrane (108) is a data reader provided in the form of an arrangement of exposed electrical contacts (107) configured to contact complementary contacts of the smart card (300).
