Patent number: 9686787Abstract: Presented are methods and apparatus for decoupling transport and control (T&C) functions from a plurality of eNBs and collecting the T&C functions in a centralized entity for managing the T&C functions for a larger pool of eNBs. An enhanced interface and protocol is defined for allowing the new T&C pool entity to communicate with the eNBs over a shared IP based network. The redistributed functionality provides for optimizing both data compression capabilities and security by compressing data earlier in its transmission path and by encrypting data before it is sent to an eNB.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2016Date of Patent: June 20, 2017Assignee: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET LM ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Adrien Joseph Comeau, David Donald, Larry Murat, Christopher Richards

Patent number: 9077396Abstract: A method and system for providing CoMP assistance in a wireless communication network are disclosed. In one embodiment a cooperating base station receives a CoMP assistance request from a serving base station. The CoMP assistance request is a request for assistance to decode a first transmission from a UE. The cooperating base station receives the first transmission from the UE. The first transmission from the UE is received at the cooperating base station at one of a time before receiving the CoMP assistance request and a time after receiving the CoMP assistance request. The cooperating base station determines a CoMP payload in response to the CoMP assistance request. The CoMP payload is based on the received first transmission from the UE. The CoMP payload is forwarded to the serving base station after the serving base station determines that the first transmission from the UE is received by the serving base station with error.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2012Date of Patent: July 7, 2015Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Adrien Joseph Comeau, Gary David Boudreau

Patent number: 9071922Abstract: The base stations in a coordinating set, i.e., CoMP set, implement distributed V-MIMO processing to decode uplink signals transmitted from multiple user terminals over the same time and frequency resources. Each base station uses the extrinsic information received from its coordinating base stations to facilitate demodulation and decoding. In the event that one of the base stations successfully decodes an uplink signal, it may provide the decoded data to the other coordinating base stations in the coordinating set. In this case, the coordinating base stations do not need to decode the uplink signal. Even if the uplink signal is not successfully decoded, the demodulated data received from the coordinating base station increases the likelihood of successfully decoding uplink signal in the next iteration of a HARQ process.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2012Date of Patent: June 30, 2015Assignee: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L M ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Gary David Boudreau, Adrien Joseph Comeau

Patent number: 8923876Abstract: A method and system for adaptive coordinated multipoint support in a wireless communication system are disclosed. According to one aspect, the invention provides an uplink coordinated multipoint, CoMP, method. A CoMP request is received at a cooperating base station from a serving base station. The CoMP request specifies a first CoMP payload type. Responsive to receiving the CoMP request, a second type of CoMP payload to provide to the serving base station is provided. The second type of CoMP payload is determined based at least in part on resource usage. The cooperating base station provides a CoMP payload of the determined second CoMP payload type to the serving base station.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2012Date of Patent: December 30, 2014Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventor: Adrien Joseph Comeau

Patent number: 8917688Abstract: A channel estimation system disclosed herein jointly estimates the channels for users transmitting signals allocated overlapping frequency resources in a received composite wideband signal. The channel estimation system may further limit the joint channel estimation process to only locally scheduled UEs and those desired users transmitting detectable desired signals using frequency resources at least partially overlapping the locally scheduled UE's frequency resources. More particularly, a local base station processes the received composite wideband signal to determine which of the potential desired user(s) have transmitted user signals allocated frequency resources that at least partially overlap the frequency resources allocated to locally scheduled users and having a sufficient signal strength and quality to be detectable as present in the received signal.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2012Date of Patent: December 23, 2014Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Adrien Joseph Comeau, Gary David Boudreau

Patent number: 8750210Abstract: A method for providing a radio architecture for a long term evolution (LTE) communication system is disclosed. According to one aspect, a radio provides power pooling and direct up-conversion of signals to be transmitted. Power pooling is provided by adjusting the gain and phase of each of a plurality of carrier signals in a digital matrix based on feedback signals received from an analog matrix, such that the output signals are coupled to one or more selected radio output ports. Direct up-conversion is achieved by up-sampling and filtering the carrier signals to be transmitted.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2011Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventor: Adrien Joseph Comeau
