Patent number: 9578649Abstract: To improve performance in devices capable of communication using multiple radio access technologies (RATs), a gap pattern may be constructed in which a first RAT is quieted during certain times to allow for a second RAT to operate without interference. Gap patterns may be constructed based on timeline constraints, such as grant scheduling and HARQ performance, or based on desired performance levels of one or more of the RATs. Gap patterns may be selected by a user equipment or base station. Gap patterns may be selected to protect information in certain subframes. Potential gap patterns may be assigned weights indicating their desirability.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2012Date of Patent: February 21, 2017Assignee: QUALCOMM INCORPORATEDInventors: Pranav Dayal, Tamer Adel Kadous, Rajat Prakash, Ashok Mantravadi, Ahmed K. Patent number: 9144084Abstract: Prior to implementing a coexistence solution for a multi-radio device, a measurement determines whether interference experienced by one radio is caused by another radio on the device. This determination includes comparing measurements of the first radio during times when the other radio is operational and when the other radio is inactive. If the compared performance measurements are within a certain range, a coexistence/interference management solution may be implemented.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2012Date of Patent: September 22, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM INCORPORATEDInventors: Ahmed K. Patent number: 9066240Abstract: A user equipment (UE) may detect a potential collision between a discontinuous reception (DRX) pattern of a first radio access technology (RAT) and a reception time of a message from a second RAT of a remote device. The reception time may be unknown. The UE may dynamically reconfigure the DRX pattern to reduce a likelihood of the potential collision. The UE may also configure transmission of a different message by the second RAT during a DRX off-period to reduce a likelihood of the potential collision.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2012Date of Patent: June 23, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM INCORPORATEDInventors: Ahmed K. Patent number: 9055588Abstract: A decentralized approach to peer discovery channel selection is used in some embodiments. In some such embodiments, a mobile wireless terminal supporting a peer to peer signaling protocol, independently determines what channels to use for peer discovery without a central controller indicating the channel or channels to be used. Assuming channels are of a suitable quality, the channels having the best quality need not be identified, with channel selection being made on a predetermined channel ordering basis from those with suitable quality. Different wireless communications devices in the system use the same peer discovery channel selection process making it likely that the same channel or channels will tend to be picked to be used for peer discovery. Other embodiments are directed to implementing a centralized approach to peer discovery channel selection in which a central controller or base station selects channels to be used for peer discovery signaling.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2011Date of Patent: June 9, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Sreeram Kannan, Ahmed K. Sadek, Stephen J. Shellhammer, Saurabh Tavildar, Nilesh Khude

Patent number: 8892050Abstract: In general, techniques are described for sensing wireless communications in television frequency bands, which may be implemented by a sensing device comprising a sensing unit, a power spectral density (PSD) estimation unit, a filter unit, a candidate selection unit, an analysis unit and a decision unit. The sensing unit senses a signal in the television frequencies bands. The PSD estimation unit calculates an estimate of a PSD for the sensed signal. The filter unit filters the estimated PSD. The candidate selection unit analyzes the filtered PSD to identify a candidate frequency representative of a potentially in use frequency. The analysis unit computes a test statistic for the candidate frequency. The decision unit compares the test statistic to a threshold to identify whether the candidate frequencies is actively in use by wireless communication devices.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2010Date of Patent: November 18, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Stephen J. Patent number: 8879445Abstract: A method for mitigating the impact of a power imbalance on a remote data rate in a wireless local area network (WLAN) includes transmitting a wireless local area network (WLAN) acknowledgement (ACK) packet at a first transmit power level to a remote device. The method further includes transmitting, to the remote device, a WLAN data packet at a second transmit power level that is lower than the first transmit power level of the WLAN ACK packet. Another method for mitigating the impact of a power imbalance on a remote data rate in a wireless local area network (WLAN) may include selecting a wireless local area network (WLAN) acknowledgement (ACK) packet transmit rate independent from a rate at which a WLAN data packet is received. This method further includes transmitting, to a remote device, a WLAN ACK packet at the selected WLAN ACK packet transmit rate.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2012Date of Patent: November 4, 2014Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Ahmed K. Patent number: 8774209Abstract: Apparatus and method for spectrum sharing using listen before talk (LBT) and quiet periods are disclosed. This includes assessing using LBT to determine if a shared spectrum channel is being used by at least one other network, and transmitting transmission frames over the shared spectrum channel in at least one of an uplink or a downlink when the channel is determined as not being used. The accumulated time of transmission use of the spectrum channel is counted based on predetermined conditions, and a determination made when the accumulated time exceeds a maximum allotted time. Transmission of frames by a network is allowed to continue if the maximum time has not been exceeded and the spectrum remains available. A quiet period is then executed once the maximum time period is exceeded.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2010Date of Patent: July 8, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Ahmed K. Patent number: 8749714Abstract: White space signals are differentiated from licensed ATSC signals through modification of a waveform of the white space signal. White space signals may be modified by shifting the ATSC-compatible waveform so that the pilot frequency of the white space signal is at a location outside of the frequency range associated with the pilot frequency in a licensed ATSC signal or embedding a watermark signal into said ATSC-like white space signals. White space device transmitters generate the signals with these modifications and white space receivers are equipped to detect whether a pilot exists in the standard licensed pilot frequencies. Based on these differences, white space devices can better operate without interfering with licensed ATSC transmission. Additionally, the modification techniques may be used to embed data in the white space signal that may be used to communicate connection data or networking data to other white space devices.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2010Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Ahmed K.
