    Abstract: A photon detection apparatus that includes a photon detector configured to detect single photons. The apparatus includes: a time-to-voltage converter circuit generating a signal proportional to the time interval the photon detector exceeds a reference threshold. Thus, it is the length of time the photon detector exceeds the threshold rather than integrated signal from the photon detector that indicates whether a photon is detected. A second threshold test then discriminates detection events based on the output signal from the time-to-voltage converter.
