  • Patent number: 6772436
Abstract: A system enabling television viewers to participate in an audio conference from audio-enabled remote control devices that are equipped with microphones and speakers without requiring the viewer to “dial in” as in a conventional conference call. The system determines the TV channel being watched by the viewer and collects the viewer information that is coming from the remote control device. The user input information is transmitted to an audio conference control center. The information regarding all the viewers interested in participating in an audio conference are collected and processed at an audio conference control center. An operation entity is connected to the audio conference control center for reserving the conference resources provided in an audio bridge device for the viewed TV program channel.

  • Patent number: 6078961
Abstract: In an Internet environment, more specifically in a World Wide Web (WWW) environment, the disclosed architecture and method allow a user to receive multimedia information consisting of a very large amount of data from a multimedia server over a high bandwidth data path. The high bandwidth data path could possibly be a cable TV network or a satellite downlink which the user is sharing with other users on a demand-assignment basis. The user interacts in a regular fashion with all other WWW servers and controls the multimedia server over a regular Internet connection, possibly via a modem or a local area network. No change to the standard WWW protocols is required to implement this method.

  • Patent number: 5973685
Abstract: A system architecture enables the distribution, to users connected to a digital broadcast medium, of supplementary information, which is presented and accessed in the context of the viewing of a video program. This ancillary, or "follow-up" information (FUI) is embedded in the same transport stream (digital multimedia broadcast stream) as the digital video and audio content. The FUI may take the form of video, audio or text. Alternatively, the transport stream may carry pointers to follow-up information (PFUI) instead of the information itself. In the latter case, the pointers are saved and used subsequently in the selection of FUI from a channel which carries data exclusively. In the former case, the user selects the FUI (supplementary information) which is to be extracted from the broadcast stream as it is transmitted.

  • Patent number: 5493652
Abstract: A memory management system for maximizing the number of contiguous free buffers to reduce the required number of free buffer pointers. Accordingly, with this invention a buffer memory is divided into two disjoint areas with one area having only contiguous free buffers while the other area has a combination of free and used buffers. This invention also has a means for maximizing the number of contiguous free buffers by using the buffers in the area having only contiguous free buffers only if there are no free buffers in the other area having both used and free buffers.
