Patent number: 10610984Abstract: A one-piece piston including a combustion bowl which is cast to its final form and includes at least one irregularity spaced from a central axis. The piston is initially fabricated of an upper crown member and a lower crown member, which are joined together. The piston is then chucked into a machine tool, such as a CNC lathe, which locates either the piston's top surface or a portion of the combustion bowl and establishes its location as a datum plane. It is this datum plane which serves as a reference location for subsequent machining operations of the piston.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 2016Date of Patent: April 7, 2020Assignee: Tenneco IncInventors: Airton Martins, Carmo Ribeiro

Patent number: 9909527Abstract: A hybrid induction welded piston including an upper piston part welded to a lower piston part is provided. The piston is produced by induction heating the upper piston part and the lower piston part, and bringing the parts together to a part growth compensated position. The method then includes rotating the upper piston part 17 to 34 degrees clockwise and then 17 to 34 degrees counterclockwise. In addition to controlling the axial position and degree of rotation, the force applied to the piston parts is controlled so that preferably no flash is formed in a narrow cooling chamber of the piston. During the rotating steps, the pressure gradually increases to a maximum level which occurs while the upper piston part is rotating in the second direction. The piston includes a homogenous metallurgical bond across the weld and no indentation on the outer surface at the weld prior to machining.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2014Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: Federal-Mogul LLCInventors: Zachary Odel Roelofs, Airton Martins, Ross Evers, Oscar Garza

Patent number: 9677500Abstract: A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a piston body which is made of steel. The piston body has a crown portion with an upper combustion surface, a pair of skirts which depend from the crown surface, a pair of pin bosses for receiving a wrist pin and a plurality of pin boss bridges which extend from the pin bosses to the skirts. Each of the pin boss bridges extends axially to a lower end which is opposite of the crown portion and has a rib with an increased thickness at its lower end. At least one of the pin boss bridges has a generally flat counter-bore surface for providing a reference location for machining of the piston body.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2016Date of Patent: June 13, 2017Assignee: Federal-Mogul LLCInventors: Eduardo Matsuo, Airton Martins

Patent number: 8474366Abstract: A piston has a pair of diametrically opposite skirt portions with convex outer surfaces. Each skirt portion has opposite side edges extending substantially parallel to a central axis of the piston to a free end. The skirt portions each have a recessed slot extending radially into the convex outer surface to a recessed surface. The recessed surface extends fully across the convex outer surface to the side edges and separates an upper band section of the convex outer surface from a lower band section of the convex outer surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2009Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignee: Federal-Mogul CorporationInventors: Miguel Azevedo, Andrew Leibold, Airton Martins
