    Abstract: In the production of an aromatic polyester by reacting at least one aromatic diester of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group having 3 to 8 carbon atoms; andAr.sub.2 is an arylene group,with at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid of the formula ##STR2## wherein Ar.sub.2 is an arylene group,in the presence of a catalyst, the improvement which comprises employing a transition metal salt of naphthenic acid as the catalyst.
