  • Patent number: 7147540
Abstract: In order to realize a shape of an air bearing surface of a magnetic head slider which is capable of coping with a lowering of flying height and which has high reliability, at the time of polishing the air bearing surface of the magnetic head slider by bringing the air bearing surface and the surface of a polishing machine into contact with each other, machining is conducted in the condition where the stiffness acting between both the members is enhanced, and the standard deviation of the flatness of the air bearing surface machined and the standard deviation of the recess amount between the air bearing surface and a magnetic element are controlled. Thus, it is possible to efficiently manufacture a magnetic head slider which enables driving at a low flying height.

  • Patent number: 7085103
Abstract: A magnetic head slider, for sliding on a magnetic disk, which has a leading edge, a trailing edge, an air bearing surface having a front step bearing of submicron depth made from the leading edge, and a rail surface made from the front step bearing. A negative pressure recess which is deeper than the front step bearing, is formed as a recess from the rail surf ace, and a side step bearing with a depth identical to that of the front step bearing is made from the rail surface. Side padB are provided which each have a width W and length L, wherein W is greater than L.

  • Patent number: 6920016
Abstract: A thin film magnetic head includes a three-step configuration including deep and shallow groove surfaces, a super shallow groove surface, and an air bearing surface, and also, island-shaped center rail is provided in the center of the air outflow end of the disk-facing air bearing surface having a boundary on the surface of base alumina between a head element portion and a substrate, without including the surface of the substrate. Further, by providing in the surface of the substrate the super shallow groove surface shallower than a shallow groove surface, an alumina recession between the surface of the substrate and the head element portion, produced in a shallow dual step sub ambient slider, can be eliminated. Magnetic spacing between the head of the head element portion and the magnetic layer of the disk can be thereby reduced.

  • Patent number: 6881124
Abstract: An L-shaped slide plate mounted with a workpiece holding device on a slide guide is firmly attached to an angle adjustment mechanism, and a reciprocating motion drive unit mounted with the angle adjustment mechanism on a slider table is firmly attached to a bridge so that an angle between a surface of a workpiece to be lapped and a surface of a lapping plate is kept substantially constant, and also the bridge is disposed so as to stride the lapping plate. Thereby, in a state of row bar in which a plurality of magnetic head sliders run in a line, an air bearing surface of magnetic head can be lapped with high accuracy with an element recession being decreased and an occurrence of a scratch being restrained.

  • Patent number: 5483734
Abstract: A lower magnetic film, a magnetic gap layer, a conductor coil, an insulating layer for electrically insulating the conductor coil, an upper magnetic film and a protective film are laminated on a substrate. Formation data of a lamination step are collected. An optimum value of a magnetic gap depth G of the magnetic gap layer is calculated on the basis of the formation data. The magnetic gap depth is machined to the optimum value on the basis of the optimum value so calculated.
