  • Patent number: 4240395
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has a fuel injection pump and an air/fuel ratio controller. The controller has a lever that is connected to the pump lever. An aneroid moves the controller lever as a function of changes in intake manifold vacuum to maintain a constant air/fuel ratio to the mixture charge. A fuel enrichment linkage is provided that modifies the movement of the fuel flow control lever by the aneroid in response to changes in manifold gas temperature levels and exhaust gas recirculation to maintain the constant air/fuel ratio. A manual override is provided to obtain a richer air/fuel ratio for maximum acceleration.

  • Patent number: 4239023
Abstract: FIG. 1 shows a fuel injection system for an engine having main and prechamber combustion chambers 14 and 22 and separate fuel injectors 18 and 26 supplied from a common source fuel line 50 through a shuttle valve assembly 30. FIG. 3 shows the shuttle valve assembly including a plunger 136 movable by fuel pressure in line 50 and inlet 106 to unseat a ball valve 142 and pressurize a chamber 126 and a line connected to prechamber injector 26 to inject fuel first through the prechamber injector 26 and then through the main injector 18 only after termination of injection through the injector 26 by a seating of the ball valve 142 against a seat 138 to close the chamber.

  • Patent number: 4213435
Abstract: A air/fuel ratio regulator for control of the movement of a fuel flow control lever on a fuel injection pump. A lever is connected to the pump lever and moved by an aneroid to change the pump fuel flow as a function of engine manifold vacuum changes to maintain a constant air/fuel ratio to the mixture charge. A fuel enrichment lever moves to modify the movement of the fuel control lever to compensate for changes in intake manifold gas temperature as sensed by a coil thermostat, to maintain the constant air/fuel ratio. A fuel enrichment shaft having a piston is connected to the enrichment lever and to a number of spaced, interconnected but relatively movable pistons, and that are adjustable to change the position of the enrichment lever and therefore the air/fuel ratio as a function of exhaust gas recirculation back into the engine, and operating the engine at cruising conditions for an extended period, or operating the engine at idle speed, all with leaner air/fuel ratios.

  • Patent number: 4208995
Abstract: FIGS. 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, and 1e collectively schematically illustrate a fuel injection control system for an internal combustion engine having a fuel pump 38 that has a fuel flow output that varies as a direct function of engine speed, an air/fuel ratio controller 100 that has a mechanical linkage that varies the output of pump 38 as a function of changes in engine intake manifold vacuum acting on an aneroid 122 to maintain a constant air/fuel ratio to the engine mixture charge, and a linkage type regulator with five vacuum controlled motors 156, 170, 178, 186 and 190, that modify the position of the regulator 100 in a step-wise progressive and sequential manner to establish exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and to change fuel flow to compensate for the change in oxygen concentration in the mixture charge due to EGR flow and other engine operating conditions as well as engine operating temperature changes.

  • Patent number: 4197059
Abstract: FIGS. 1 and 1a show a fuel injection pump assembly having an axially and rotatably mounted fuel metering sleeve valve 60 rotated by an engine driven pumping member 34 whereby the valve helix 68 selectively covers and uncovers a fuel spill hole 74 leading to a fuel delivery valve 82, the pump having a centrifugal injection timing advance mechanism 108, 110, 112 connecting the pumping member 34 and the metering valve by a pin and slot type connection permitting an angular rotation of the metering valve relative to the pumping member to advance the position of the helix 68 relative to the spill port 74 per revolution of the pumping member, and other means 170, 172, 95 operable at will to retard the fuel injection timing schedule regardless of the position of the injection timing advance mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4197058
Abstract: FIG. 1 shows a fuel injection pump assembly that includes a single fuel metering valve 60 of the sleeve type cooperating through spill ports 74 with the output of a number of coaxially mounted pump plungers 46 and an equal number of fuel delivery valves 82, the plungers being moved axially by an engine driven pump 34 that is drive connected by splines 99 and pin 108 and slot 110 type connections to a centrifugal fuel injection timing advance means 112 and to the metering valve 60 permitting the valve to move angularly and axially relative to the pump to provide changes in timing and rate of injection, and a manually operated lever 180 to axially move the metering valve 60 at will to change the fuel flow rate without influence of fuel pressure forces on the valve end and without the necessity of also moving the mass of the first means 112 that changes the injection timing.
