  • Patent number: 7456008
Abstract: A modified virus including one or more non-native polypeptides, and the use of such viruses in therapy, particularly in the treatment of tumours or other cancerous cells are disclosed. The polypeptides includes one or more framework moieties each containing one or more binding moieties, and is capable of being expressed in the cytoplasm and nucleus of a mammalian host cell in a conformation which is maintained in the absence of a ligand for the binding moieties. The conformation allows the binding moieties subsequently to bind with the ligand, and the polypeptide is capable of transport through the nuclear membrane, wherein the modified virus has an altered tropism conferred by the binding moieties.

  • Patent number: 5216698
Abstract: A phase-locking device comprises a "fast" loop providing for the correction of the transient disturbances and a "slow" loop providing for correction on a wide range of phase shifts.

  • Patent number: 5075635
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for correcting the phase induced by the class C operation of a solid state amplifier. It is applied in the field of the manufacture of pulse radar transmitters. Solid state amplifiers are prone to generating phase variations. The invention relates to a measurement and correction loop which allows the real time elimination of phase variations due to heating up.

  • Patent number: 5004298
Abstract: After they have been washed out, cavities (4) in rock salt contain a large quantity of brine (8) at a temperature which is lower than the temperature of the surrounding formation (2). This means that the cavity cannot be sealed quickly because the brine will expand progressively as it heats up. The method of the invention serves to shorten the time period between the end of working the cavity for salt and being able to abandon the cavity finally from about 30 years to about 2 years. The method consists in injecting quantities of a mixture (12) into the cavity (4), the mixture being of greater density than brine (8) and being capable of setting, with equivalent quantities of brine (8) being returned to the surface, and then in keeping the cavity (4) open after it has been completely filled with mixture (12) for as long as it takes the rock salt (2) to creep and fill up the shrinkage voids which appear during setting of the mixture (12), after which the cavity (4) can be sealed.

  • Patent number: 4919822
Abstract: A method of geologically confining toxic industrial waste, the method consisting of: using a cavity (1) previously leached from a mass of rock salt (2), the cavity being initially filled with brine (5); incorporating the waste in a pumpable waste-containing mixture (10) of density greater than the density of the brine and suitable for setting once put into place; inserting a predetermined quantity of a buffer liquid (7) into the bottom of the cavity by means of a dip tube (8) positioned in a well (4) and in communication with the surface (3), the buffer liquid being immiscible both with the brine and with the waste-containing mixture, the density of the buffer liquid lying between the density of the brine and the density of the waste-containing mixture, and the buffer liquid including one or more halogen-containing solvents; inserting the waste-containing mixture into the cavity by the means of the dip tube while the bottom end of the dip tube is maintained within the previously inserted buffer liquid; and re

  • Patent number: 4881048
Abstract: A frequency locking device, with pre-positioning in which an oscillator is controlled by the output of a frequency discriminator. Shifts in the frequency discriminator are removed by performing calibrations on this discriminator through two signals with known frequencies Fo and F1 produced by a generator. The signal resulting from this calibration is used to prepare a reference voltage for a digital/analog converter which also receives a digital oscillator control signal and which then produces a voltage representing the control voltage of the oscillator.

  • Patent number: 4689064
Abstract: A method for maintaining constant the composition of liquefied gas in a store (1) comprises extracting product in its gas phase from the store by means of a compressor (8) to raise its pressure. The gas is then cooled in a first heat exchanger (9) and then in a second heat exchanger (10), to a final temperature such that on expanding the gas into a tank (11) most of it is liquefied. The small amount of remaining gas is recycled to the compressor inlet after passing through the first heat exchange as its cooling fluid. The product is also extracted in its liquid phase (3) by a pump (19). The liquid is then passed through a battery of pumps (20) which raise it to a pressure high enough for a distribution network to be directly supplied therewith (after vaporization). A portion of the highly compressed liquid phase is used as the cooling fluid for the second heat exchanger (10).

  • Patent number: 4671700
Abstract: The walls of the cavity (10) are interconnected by rounded portions. The cavity (10) may be cylindrical in shape with hemispherical ends (11, 12). This shape reduces cracking in the walls during an initial cavity cooling process.

  • Patent number: 4580924
Abstract: To block the mouth of a well (1) opening out in the ceiling of an underground cavity (2), a part (4) in the shape of a keystone is used, which has a hole through the middle for the passage of pipes (31, 32), suitable cements are then poured in to make the whole system integral, and the well is filled.

  • Patent number: 4140423
Abstract: During the process of cooling, the stresses in the earth pass first through a maximum compression and then this gives place to traction up to the moment when fissures appear. The application of cooling is conducted so as to reduce the size of these fissures and to prevent their propagation through the compressed zone. They are plugged preferably by spraying water in the course of application of cooling.
