    Abstract: A rotary element of a printing press is provided, in particular in a folding apparatus of the printing press, including an encoder for generating a first periodic signal in response to rotation of the rotary element, the encoder being linked to an evaluation unit which has at least one synthesizer for generating a second signal having a resolution ratio, a frequency ratio, and a phase relation to the first signal. The possible uses of the signal generated by the encoder in response to the rotation of the rotary element are expanded and rendered flexible.
