  • Patent number: 6715321
Abstract: A method of fabricating an optical fiber preform is disclosed which includes a step of outside deposition of silica possibly doped with at least one dopant by injecting at least one substance in the form of silica or a precursor of silica in the vicinity of a heating area created by a heating system during at least one pass of an injector system and the heating system along a longitudinal axis of the preform during which the relative positions of the injector and heating systems ore adjusted so that silica is deposited in the heated area regardless of the position of the heating system.

  • Patent number: 6631628
Abstract: Natural or synthetic silica is deposited on a preform set into rotation in front of a plasma torch which moves back and forth substantially parallel to a longitudinal direction of the preform, a first feed duct feeds the plasma with grains of natural or synthetic silica while a second feed duct feeds the plasma with a fluorine or chlorine compound, preferably a fluorine compound, mixed with a carrier gas. Any sodium or lithium contained in the grains of natural or synthetic silica react with the fluorine or chlorine of the fluorine or chlorine compound, thereby making it possible to improve the optical quality of fibers drawn from a preform built up with natural or synthetic silica, and to do so at reduced cost.

  • Patent number: 6412310
Abstract: The invention relates to manufacturing glass fiber preforms. It relates to a method comprising rotating preform about its own axis, and displacing a plasma torch in translation relative to the preform in a direction parallel to the axis of the preform, the axes of the flame and of the preform and being offset by a certain distance, and then inserting glass powder into the plasma flame under gravity. According to the invention, the glass powder is accelerated before penetrating into the plasma flame by means of an accelerator gas, and the offset distance between the axes is reduced with increasing acceleration of the powder. The invention is applicable to manufacturing glass fibers, and in particular optical fibers.

  • Publication number: 20010015080
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a cylindrical preform for use in making an optical fiber of substantially smaller diameter. The method consists in increasing the diameter of a primary preform by injecting grains onto the surface of the primary preform and in fixing the grains on the surface by means of a heat flow obtained by a plasma torch comprising a tube made of refractory material, and an inductor surrounding the tube. The distance between the inductor and the end of the tube is reduced when the diameter of the preform increases. The temperature of the outside surface is thus increased, thereby enabling preforms to be obtained of larger diameter or with improved efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6269663
Abstract: The deposit of natural or synthetic silica comprises a preform (1) set into rotation (7) in front of a plasma torch (3) which moves back and forth substantially parallel to a longitudinal direction (L) of the preform (1), a feed duct (9) for feeding the plasma with grains of natural or synthetic silica (11), characterized in that the same feed duct (9) feeds the plasma with a fluorine or chlorine compound, preferably a fluorine compound, mixed with a carrier gas (15). Sodium or lithium contained in the grains of natural or synthetic silica reacts with the fluorine or chlorine of the fluorine or chlorine compound, making it possible to improve the optical quality of fibers built up with the natural or synthetic silica at reduced cost.

  • Patent number: 6178779
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of assembling two optical fiber preforms together end-to-end, the method comprising the following operations: the two cylindrical preforms are placed in alignment along a common longitudinal axis; the preforms are rotated about the common longitudinal axis; the facing ends of said preforms are heated by a heater; and the preforms are moved towards each other parallel to the common axis to press them against each other so as to form intimate contact between the ends after cooling. According to the invention, the heating is performed by causing the preforms or heater to move in a radial direction orthogonal to the common longitudinal axis in such a manner as to heat the peripheries and then the cores of said preforms.

  • Patent number: 5931984
Abstract: A device for drawing down an optical fiber preform (2) connected at one end to a feed rod (3) having an equal or smaller diameter. A chamber (11) in which the preform is drawn has an upper part (11A) with an opening (12). The opening engages the preform to seal the chamber. An enclosure (5) has a seal (6) at its upper part (5A) for sealing around the feed rod. A lower part (5B) of the enclosure contacts the upper part of the chamber to seal the chamber while the feed rod is passing through the opening.

  • Patent number: 4676820
Abstract: A method of fabricating an optical waveguide comprising a plane substrate made of a material having a relatively low refractive index, a plane light propagation layer made of a material having a higher refractive index than the substrate, inserted between two strips of a material having a lower refractive index than its own, and a plane light confining layer of a material having a lower refractive index than the propagation layer. At least one of the layer, meaning either the propagation or the confinement layer, is obtained by causing to circulate in a tube of pure silica the vapors of a gaseous compound of silicon transformable into silica and of a gaseous compound of a doping agent transformable into one of its own oxides and heating said vapors sufficiently to obtain the deposit of a layer of doped silica having a refractive index different from that of the pure silica.
