  • Patent number: 10536322
Abstract: A service control manager manages one or more services on a computing device, such as creating processes that host the services, stopping the processes that host the services, and so forth. The service control manager also provides a request to a resource manager to reserve, monitor, and/or place limitations on resources for each of the one or more services. For example, the service control manager can request to be notified when resource usage by a service exceeds a resource usage threshold value. These resources are various resources of the computing device, such as a processor (CPU), memory, storage device input/output (I/O), network usage, and so forth. If the usage of a resource by a service satisfies the resource usage threshold value for that resource for that service, then the resource manager notifies the service control manager so the service control manager can take an appropriate remedial action.

  • Patent number: 7028183
Abstract: Techniques for enhancing security in networking environments, whereby a cryptographic node negotiates a set of security parameters (a “security association”) with an end node, on behalf of a routing node (an “edge router”), and then securely distributes the negotiated security parameters to the edge router and/or to other edge routers in the network. The disclosed negotiation techniques allow the end node to physically move during the negotiation, yet still establish the security association, and the secure distribution enables the end node to move seamlessly through the network yet continue communicating securely. The disclosed techniques may also be used advantageously in other environments, such as clustered server environments, and allow an end node to communicate with multiple routing or server nodes for a variety of reasons (for example, during a hot-swap to a different server during fail-over or as a result of load balancing).

  • Patent number: 6604140
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer product that enables one or more computing devices to discover and use services over a network, which may be ad-hoc when the computing device is mobile. Service discovery is based on periodic multicasting of exported service descriptions to nearby devices over the (ad-hoc) network. Middleware enables a device to discover, advertise and use services. This enables software clients on the same device to share a service implementation (in the case of a local service) or to share an implementation proxy (in the case of a remote service). Each device being aware of the services (and service locations) that are currently available generally reduces the response time associated with accessing available services. While service descriptors are multicast and discovered, the service software is only downloaded on the device when the service is used. This enables economical resource management that is particularly useful for mobile devices.
