  • Patent number: 8197195
Abstract: A turbocharger having a variable nozzle with stepped two-stage vanes (50), the variable nozzle comprising a tubular piston (70) disposed in the bore (44) of the turbine housing (38) such that the piston (70) is axially slidable adjacent to the vanes (50) that extend across the nozzle. Each vane defines a first vane stage (50a) proximate the free end of the vane, the second vane stage (50b) having a different aerodynamic contour in comparison with the first vane stage (50a), each vane comprising a step (60) transitioning from the first vane stage (50a) to the second vane stage (50b). The piston (70) in a closed position closes the second vane stage (50b) so that exhaust gas flows only through the first vane stage (50a). The second vane stage (50b) is progressively opened as the piston (70) is axially slid toward an open position.

  • Patent number: 8191367
Abstract: A sliding piston cartridge (50) for a turbocharger (20) that is insertable into a bore (44) in the turbine housing (38) as a unit and that includes all of the components of a sliding piston type variable nozzle. The sliding piston cartridge comprises a carrier (52) having a tubular portion that interfaces with the bore of the turbine housing. A sliding piston (62) is disposed within the carrier and makes sliding contact therewith. Vanes (58) are mounted on or formed as a part of the carrier at its upstream end, the vanes extending across a turbine nozzle. The piston slides between a closed position and an open position relative to the carrier. The tubular portion of the carrier can include openings (66) that are progressively uncovered by the piston as it moves toward the open position, to allow additional flow to enter the turbine wheel without passing through the vanes.

  • Patent number: 7338254
Abstract: A turbocharger having a sliding piston assembly comprising a tubular piston disposed in the bore of the turbine housing such that the piston is axially slidable relative to the turbine housing. The piston assembly further comprises a tubular carrier inserted axially into the bore of the turbine housing surrounding the piston and fixed against axial movement relative to the turbine housing, a radially outer surface of the carrier engaging an inner surface of the bore and a radially inner surface of the carrier being slidably engaged by a radially outer surface of the piston. The carrier defines an axial split extending a length of the carrier, and the carrier is resiliently flexible. Accordingly, the axial split allows the carrier to expand and contract in diameter.

  • Patent number: 7249930
Abstract: A turbine housing assembly includes a tubular piston disposed in a bore of a turbine housing and axially slidable between a closed position and an open position for blocking a nozzle by an amount dependent on axial positioning of the piston. A bypass control member is disposed in the turbine housing and is slidable between a no-bypass position closing a bypass passage and a open bypass opening the bypass passage. The piston is structured and arranged to slide relative to the bypass control member for a part of a full stroke of the piston from the closed position toward the open position thereof, and then to engage the bypass control member and cause the bypass control member to slide together with the piston as the piston further slides toward the open position thereof such that the bypass control member is moved toward the bypass position.
