  • Patent number: 6926066
Abstract: An improved magnesium die casting system incorporates filling of the shot sleeve from the underside and/or in-line re-melting of scrap magnesium using a re-melt furnace. A pump is used to transfer molten magnesium from a casting furnace to the shot sleeve through an underflow filling tube. The shot sleeve is filled in a laminar manner, minimizing entrapped gases. The in-line re-melt system allows recycling of scrap in-house and reduces energy cost associated with heating and re-heating scrap. The improved system increases casting quality and reduces scrap rates and recycling costs.

  • Patent number: 6602462
Abstract: An auger pump for pumping molten magnesium and its alloys from a furnace to a die casting machine, ingot mould, DC caster or the like is disclosed. The pump is comprised of a linearly aligned upper and lower portion. The upper portion is comprised of a housing which is attached to the furnace lid. An inverter duty electric motor is attached to the top of the housing and is controlled by a PLC. The auger shaft runs longitudinally between each portion and is supported in position by guide bearings located in the upper portion. The lower portion comprises a tubular casing which contains a gas inlet aperture and an feeder inlet aperture for drawing the molten magnesium into the pump. The outlet of the pump, a connector, is attached to a heated transfer tube, which conveys the molten magnesium to the mould.

  • Patent number: 6345801
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved mould for casting a standard Magnesium ingot. The mould is constructed so as to minimize the surface area of the molten Magnesium which is exposed to the surrounding air. This significantly reduces the reliance on costly or harmful gases typically used in the casting process. The vertical mould which is internally tapered, has an open top and a closure at the bottom thereof. The ingot is easily removed from the mould when said closure is opened. The mould is adapted for use as part of an automated process employing a cyclic conveyance system for efficiently producing Magnesium ingots from recycled scrap Magnesium.
