  • Patent number: 8149904
Abstract: Provided is a system and method for a modem including one or more processing paths. Also included is a number of interconnected modules sequentially arrayed along the one or more paths. Each module is configured to (i) process signals passed along the paths in accordance with the sequence and (ii) implement predetermined functions to perform the processing. • Publication number: 20090046769
Abstract: A modem and method for operating same. A receiver circuit of the modem is coupled to receive a continuous analog signal from a communication channel. This analog signal includes both packet and idle information. The receiver circuit monitors the analog signal to detect the presence of idle information. Upon detecting idle information, the receiver circuit enters a standby mode in which the processing requirements of the receiver circuit are reduced. A burst mode protocol is also provided, in which packets of digital information are modulated by a transmitter circuit the modem, thereby converting the packets of digital information into analog signal bursts of discrete duration. These analog signal bursts are transmitted from the transmitter circuit to a telephone line. However, the transmitter circuit does not generate any signals between the analog signal bursts. A receiver circuit monitors the telephone line to detect the analog signal bursts.

A burst mode protocol is also provided, in which packets of digital information are modulated by a transmitter circuit of the modem, thereby converting the packets of digital information into analog signal bursts of discrete duration. These analog signal bursts are transmitted from the transmitter circuit to a telephone line. A receiver circuit monitors the telephone line to detect the analog signal bursts. Upon detecting the presence of the analog signal bursts on the telephone line, the receiver circuit demodulates the analog signal bursts using full processing capabilities of the receiver circuit. However, upon detecting the absence of the analog signal bursts on the telephone line, the demodulating function of the receiver circuit is disabled.

  • Patent number: 5778419
Abstract: A memory chip for storage and retrieval of data transmitted as streams of data at sustained peak data transfer rates. The memory chip includes a memory device and an interface capable of achieving high bandwidth throughput. The memory device decodes, arbitrates between, and executes memory access commands, and generates memory access responses. The interface includes a data path, and a number of memory controllers. The interface receives and transmits input and output data streams, and the memory controllers control the flow of the input and output data streams within the memory chip. A packet buffer is coupled between the data path and the memory device. The packet buffer provides for temporary storage of memory access commands, response information, and forwarding data.

  • Patent number: 5649160
Abstract: The present invention encompasses techniques for reducing digital noise in integrated circuits and circuit assemblies, particularly dense mixed-signal integrated circuits, based upon shaping the noise from the digital circuit and concentrating it in a single, or a small number, of parts of the frequency spectrum. Generally, the presence of noise in the analog circuit is less important at certain frequencies, and therefore the spectral peak or peaks from the digital circuit can be carefully placed to result in little or no interference. As an example, a radio receiver might be designed such that the peaks of the digital noise lie between received channels, outside the band edges of each.

  • Patent number: 5541867
Abstract: An apparatus and method for decorrelating pairs of mutually contaminated channels in a multi-channel digital signal including two identical data processing paths and a feedback path. Each pair of mutually contaminated channels consists of a first contaminated channel and a second contaminated channel. Initially, first and second shined signals are generated by shifting the original contaminated signal such that the first shined signal has the first contaminated channel centered at zero frequency and the second shined signal has the second contaminated channel centered at zero frequency. Each of the first and second shifted signals are coupled to one of the two identical signal processing paths. The first path generates an error corruption component corresponding to the first shifted input signal and subtracts this corruption component from the second shifted signal in order to generate a third decorrelated digital signal.

  • Patent number: 5500811
Abstract: A compact Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter using one or both of a compact address sequencer and a compact multiplier/accumulator. The address sequencer exploits certain symmetry properties existing between different phases of a polyphase FIR filter in order to reduce coefficient storage and simplify address sequencing. The multiplier/accumulator is capable of performing two multiply/accumulate operations per clock cycle, avoiding in certain instances the need to add a second multiplier/accumulator. The area required to realize a FIR filter for performing real-time filter is therefore reduced.

  • Patent number: 4748580
Abstract: A single-chip fixed/floating-point arithmetic processor, a three port ALU, a plurality of storage registers R, S, F0 and F1, a constant store circuit and an output data register F. Two of the storage registers R and S are provided for storing 64-bit input operands and two of the regusters F0 and F1 are provided for storing 64-bit results of operations performed in the ALU. Each of the registers are provided with three output ports and corresponding pass gates for selectively transferring data from the registers to the three inputs of the ALU under the control of control signals applied to the pass gates. The constant store is also coupled to one of the input ports of the ALU by a pass gate for transferring constants to the ALU under the control of a pass gate. Results of the ALU are provided to the data output register F for further processing off-chip.
