Patent number: 6343760Abstract: A webbing sensor for a vehicle safety restraint retractor. The sensor comprises an inertial member, mounted for rotation coaxially with a retractor spool, a pawl for engaging the spool and locking it against rotation under emergency conditions, and a calibration spring biasing the inertial disc so that it tends to rotate with the spool unless there is a sudden acceleration or deceleration of a value such as to overcome the resilience of the spring. The spring is connected to the spool via the pawl so that relative rotation between the disc and the spool results in movement of both ends of the spring, preferably by approximately the same distance. Throughout the locking procedure, the spring force remains substantially constant and thus the bias torque on the inertia disc remains substantially constant, and the locking performance of the sensor is improved.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2000Date of Patent: February 5, 2002Assignee: Breed Automotive Technology, Inc.Inventor: Alan George Smithson

Patent number: 6322018Abstract: A lockbar for a seatbelt retractor has an elongate joining member and two end pieces joined to the joining member at opposite ends therefore. The end pieces are made of a higher strength material than the joining member. The joining member may be made by extrusion and may be tubular or may be formed as a hollow member. The end pieces may be produced as forgings, die casting or plastic injection moldings or by other suitable methods. They can be produced from different materials and to different designs to suit the specification of the seatbelt retractor. Hence a single basic seatbelt retractor design can be employed for a variety of strength requirements by selecting appropriate end pieces and an appropriate joining member.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2000Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: Breed Automotive Technology, Inc.Inventors: Alan George Smithson, David Blackadder, Paul Bowman, Joseph Patrick Harte, John Taylor, Nigel Mitchinson

Patent number: 6299092Abstract: A retractor for a vehicle safety restraint which comprises web locking wedges (49a, 49b) which grip the seat belt webbing (19), under certain predetermined load conditions, so as to more securely restrain the vehicle occupant at the beginning of a crash pulse and which includes a load limiting arrangement so as to allow a limited and controlled pay out of webbing at the beginning of the crash pulse. The web locking retractor thus comprises a wedge (49a, 49b) which has an inner gripping surface with a predetermined coefficient of friction relative to the seat belt webbing so that, at a predetermined loading, the webbing slips past the friction surface of the wedge. This may be achieved by using double thickness webbing along a predetermined portion of the seat belt, for example two layers of webbing, or coating the wedge or a part of the webbing with a material (322) which is erodible or deformable and which may be cut into or eroded by the friction surface of the wedge, or by teeth (320) on that surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2000Date of Patent: October 9, 2001Assignee: Breed Automotive Technology, Inc.Inventors: Alan George Smithson, Joseph Patrick Harte, John Bell, Kenneth Williamson, Elizabeth Rees, Darren Laidlaw

Patent number: 6267315Abstract: A seat belt retractor has a webbing spool fixed to a ratchet wheel having a plurality of teeth spaced about its circumference. A locking pawl has a plurality of teeth with a pitch less than the pitch of the teeth on the ratchet wheel. The pawl is arranged to pivot into engagement with the ratchet wheel, on activation of a crash sensor. Preferably there are two locking pawls and two toothed ratchet wheels. The two locking pawls may each have the same number of teeth or alternatively one may have an extra tooth which serves as a sensor tooth, engaging first with the spool ratchet wheel and phasing engagement of the other teeth as the load increases.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 31, 2001Assignee: Breed Automotive Technology, Inc.Inventors: David Blackadder, Alan George Smithson, Joseph Patrick Harte
