Abstract: Systems and methods for speech-controlled or speech-enabled health monitoring of a subject are described. A device includes a substrate configured to support a subject, a plurality of non-contact sensors configured to capture acoustic signals and force signals with respect to the subject, an audio interface configured to communicate with the subject, and a processor in connection with the plurality of sensors and the audio interface. The processor configured to determine biosignals from one or more of the acoustic signals and the force signals to monitor a subject's health status, and detect presence of speech in the acoustic signals. The audio interface configured to interactively communicate with at least one of the subject or an entity associated with the subject based on at least one of an action needed due to the subject's health status and a verbal command in detected speech.

The system comprises an application controller which interfaces with service vendors who make requests for telemetering metering actions and/or control actions; or network server for communicating via UTTs, (Utility Telemetry Trunks), with an end office switch for accessing TIUs, using a suppressed ringing connection to distinguish between telemetering connections and telephone connections; a service control point (SCP), for providing data about the telecommunications network, the data being necessary in order to allow the network server to access the correct TIU, and a data network for interconnecting the application controller, network server and switching control point. Advantageously, using this arrangement, the functions of the application controller which interfaces with the service vendor are segregated from the functions for controlling the telecommunication network to access the TIU.

Abstract: A method of operating a telecommunications network to provide network-based messaging services includes utilizing a communication link between the network and a telephone adjunct interface. The adjunct interface detects and alerts the subscriber to the existence of waiting messages. In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the invention, a combination of AC ring detection and outcall polling of the network is employed to determine whether any messages have been received by the network service platform. Specifically, if the subscriber phone is not answered after a predetermined number of rings, the interface polls the network after a suitable delay to determine if any messages were left. If so, the network transmits a code or other signal that is recognized by the interface device, and a visual and/or audible indication is then provided to the subscriber.

Abstract: A telephone adjunct interface for use with a network-based voice and/or data message storage and delivery service detects and alerts the subscriber to the existence of waiting messages. The interface device utilizes a combination of AC ring detection and outcall polling of the network to determine whether a visual and/or audible notification should be provided to the subscriber. That is, if the subscriber phone is not answered after a selected number of rings, the interface polls the network after a suitable delay to determine if any messages were left. If the subscriber line is busy or on call-forward while a calling party is seeking to leave a message, the network service platform stores the message and waits a selected interval before seeking to alert the subscriber. Advantageously, the device is configured as a small, portable and inexpensive consumer premise unit which connects easily to all standard analog telephone systems that use modular connectors.
