    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for coating a substrate comprising: (a) applying a caustic cleaner onto at least a portion of the substrate; (b) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that was subjected to step (a) with water; (c) applying an acid cleaner onto at least a portion of the caustically cleaned substrate; (d) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that was subjected to step (c) with water; and (e) applying a conversion coating comprising zirconium onto at least a portion of the acid cleaned substrate; and wherein at least one of the materials used in steps (c) and (e) is substantially chrome free. The present invention is also directed to a substrate, such as an aluminum substrate, that has been coated using the aforementioned method.

The composition contains an organotin catalyst which is or is derived from a dialkyltin compound having the structure (I): [R1][R2]—Sn?O??(I) where R1 and R2 are the same or different, and each independently represents a monovalent hydrocarbon group wherein the sum of the carbon atoms in R1 and R2 is greater than 8. The catalyst is present in an amount sufficient to effect cure at a temperature at or below 340° F. (171.1° C.). Methods of preparing and using the composition also are provided.

The resinous phase contains (a) an active hydrogen-containing ionic electrodepositable resin and (b) a curing agent adapted to react with the active hydrogens of (a). The improvement constitutes the inclusion of at least one rare earth metal compound derived from a metal selected from magnesium, strontium, barium, and mixtures thereof. The metal compound is present in an amount ranging from 1 to 10,000 parts per million of total metal provided that not more that 1,000 parts per million is in the form of soluble metal.     Abstract: The present invention provides electrodepositable compositions that in the absence of a microorganism control agent electrodeposit upon a surface of an electroconductive substrate as a substantially smooth film and which upon the addition of a microorganism control agent mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one result in an electrodepositable composition that upon electrodeposition onto the surface of the electroconductive substrate produces a comparatively rougher film, wherein all or a portion of the mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one is replaced with an aliphatic hydrocarbon material selected from halonitroalkanes, halonitroalkenes, hydroxyalkyl substituted nitroalkanes and mixtures thereof resulting in an electrodepositable compositions that upon electrodeposition onto the surface of the electroconductive substrate produce a substantially smooth film.

Also disclosed is a method of electrocoating a conductive substrate using the improved electrodeposition bath compositions of the invention. Metallic substrates which are coated using the method of the invention are also disclosed.
