  • Patent number: 8309020
Abstract: A system and method for identifying and making quantitative determinations of different deposits on a portion thereof, determining that the deposit is a contaminant and decontaminating at least the portion of the system is disclosed. The system comprises a controller, a sensing portion and a decontamination portion. The controller contains information about at least one noncontaminant. The sensing portion communicates with at least the controller and the portion of the system and is adapted to detect the deposit. The decontaminating portion communicates with at least the controller and is adapted to decontaminate the portion of the system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 11, 2011
Date of Patent: November 13, 2012
    Assignee: UChicago Argonne, LLC
Inventors: Laura R Skubal, Alan L McArthur
  • Patent number: 8114582
Abstract: The inventive subject matter relates to a method for detecting the presence of a biological substance of interest in a test sample of saliva or oral fluid, comprising combining said test sample with a fluorescence-labeled ligand to said biological substance and detecting a change in the fluorescence polarization of said test sample produced by binding of said fluorescence-labeled ligand to said biological substance. In one aspect of the inventive subject matter, said method comprises additional steps for comparing the fluorescence polarization of said test sample with the fluorescence polarization of a control solution. Also provided is a miniaturized, portable apparatus for measuring the fluorescence polarization of a liquid sample.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 27, 2008
Date of Patent: February 14, 2012
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy
Inventors: Malford E. Cullum, Lloyd G. Simonson, Sylvia Z. Schade, Linda A. Lininger, Alan L. McArthur

  • Patent number: 7528952
Abstract: A small, portable, hand-sized apparatus for detecting microorganisms or chemicals in liquid samples by fluorescence polarization. The apparatus operates using a low power excitation light source, such as an LED, in order to irradiate a sample with polarized light. Detection of emitted polarized light from the sample is detected in multiple planes simultaneously using low power detectors resulting in an elimination of error caused by drifts in intensity in sequential measurements and in reducing assay time.
