  • Patent number: 7387178
Abstract: Self relieving seals of this invention comprise an elastomeric seal body having a first sealing surface and a second sealing surface for contact with respective drill bit sealing surfaces. The seal includes a pair of external surfaces that each extend along the seal body between the first and second sealing surfaces. The seal includes one or more relief ports that are disposed through the seal body and that have openings through each of the seal body external surfaces. The relief port can be specially configured, e.g., have different diameter sections of constant or variable dimensions, to provide a degree of control over pressure equalization through the seal body when the seal is loaded within the drill bit. The seal may include an element, e.g., solid, tubular, or porous, disposed within the relief port to provide a further desired degree of control over pressure equalization through the seal when the seal is loaded within the drill bit.

  • Publication number: 20070107940
Abstract: A lubricant is shown and described. The lubricant includes about 1 to 15 weight percent of a sulfur-phosphorus extreme pressure agent, about 5 to 40 weight percent of a thickener, preferably a metal-complex soap, and a basestock. The basestock may be a mineral oil, a synthetic oil, or a combination thereof. Lubricant additives such as corrosion inhibitors, oxidation inhibitors, and anti-wear agents may also be added.

  • Publication number: 20060260847
Abstract: A rolling cone drill bit is provided that has gage inserts on the first row from the bit axis to cut to full gage diameter that have a cutting portion enhanced with a layer of super abrasive material. The gage cutting surface has a center axis that is canted to be more normal to the gave curve such that its point of contact at gage is away from the thinner portion of the layer of super abrasive material.

  • Publication number: 20050133265
Abstract: A lubricating grease is specific for a rock bit for drilling subterranean formations. The rock bit body includes a plurality of journal pins, each having a bearing surface, with a cutter cone mounted on each journal pin and also including a bearing surface. A grease reservoir provides lubricating grease to such bearing surfaces. The grease composition adjacent the bearing surfaces comprises a lubricating base oil, sufficient thickener and additives in the base oil to form a rock bit grease, and an effective amount of polarized graphite.
