  • Patent number: 4900566
Abstract: The invention provides a process and confectionery product in the form of at least one bar. The product of the invention provides in said form a meal replacement or diet supplement and comprises a proteinaceous material and a carbohydrate material comprising indigestible carbohydrate. The proteinaceous material and the carbohydrate material are present in a relative weight ratio of from about 1:1 to about 1:10, and the indigestible carbohydrate is a carbohydrate having a molecular weight no higher than about 5,000.

  • Patent number: 4526800
Abstract: The invention provides cereal snackfoods of the expanded variety such as crisps and the like. The snackfoods of the invention comprise discrete cooked portions of a dough composition comprising gelatinized starch and added cereal bran other than rice bran, in which the amylolytic activity of the bran is controlled, and contain at least about 5% by weight and generally no more than about 35% by weight of oil or fat. The snackfoods may be produced from a half product comprising at least some gelatinized starch and added cereal bran by frying or by immersion in a bed of hot particulate material followed by spraying with fat or oil. Even when fried the snackfoods have a lower energy value than comparable known products; moreover they are highly palatable, and the bran content provides a useful source of fibre in any diet.

  • Patent number: 4298601
Abstract: It has been discovered that the unfavorable effects observed in weight reduction treatments based on severe dietary restriction (less than 600 Kcals/day) or total fasting (as regards fat, carbohydrates and aminoacids) are avoided by the administration of aminoacids and carbohydrates in critical but much lower amounts than has been believed to be necessary. Nitrogen loss with aminoacid intake between about 15 g and 30 g per day is affected by carbohydrate intake. Nitrogen balance is maintained and ketosis and water retention are controlled when the daily intake includes, in addition to necessary minerals and vitamins, at least 15 g of aminoacids in the proportions required by man, and from 15 g to 75 g, preferably 30 g to 45 g, of carbohydrates, with a total caloric value of from 160 to about 600 Kcals, preferably less than 400 Kcals, very desirably less than 360 Kcals, and optimally in the range of from 180 to 360 Kcals.

  • Patent number: 4237118
Abstract: A dietary supplement, for use with from 61.3 to 123 grams of dried skimmed milk (or the equivalent quantity of liquid skimmed milk) in the dietary regime disclosed in copending Application Serial No. 338,257 (U.S. Pat. No. 4,009,265), in which the amount of said supplement which contains a datum level of 18.+-.9 mg iron also contains at least 182 mg sodium, at least 308 mg potassium and at least 64 mg magnesium, as well as Vitamin A in an amount of at least 750 .mu.g retinol equivalents, at least 100 i.u. Vitamin D, at least 0.76 mg thiamine, at least 14 mg nicotinic acid (or nicotinamide), and at least 18 mg ascorbic acid, and in which the total calorie content (if any) of that amount of supplement is not greater than 200 Kcals , usually is less than 100 Kcalories, and preferably does not exceed 25 Kcalories. The supplement preferably also contains 50-150 .mu.g iodine and/or at least 157 mg phosporus, and/or traces of copper, zinc and manganese, and/or at least 2 mg Vitamin B.sub.6, at least 5 .mu.

  • Patent number: 4064234
Abstract: A composition for treatment of hypercholesterolemia contains clofibrate or a clofibrate derivative, a magnesium or aluminum ion contributing compound which forms substantially insoluble metal bile acid salts and, optionally, a basic anion exchange resin. The composition components combine to give synergistic effect.
