  • Patent number: 8236973
Abstract: Presently disclosed are methods and apparatus for separation of reaction products from reaction mixtures in an ionic liquid catalysis process, particularly in conversion of biomass, cellulose, and sugars into chemical intermediates such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). In one embodiment an ion exclusion adsorption mechanism is used for the separation process. The process comprises (i) mixing the ionic liquid-containing reaction mixture with de-ionized water, (ii) flowing the water solution mixture into an adsorption column, (iii) eluting the column with a water- and/or alcohol-based fluid, and (iv) collecting separated fractions at different elution times.

  • Patent number: 5538591
Abstract: A tape cutting apparatus is described for cutting off a portion of tape (4) comprising first and second layers (4a,4c) secured one to another by an adhesive layer (4b). The apparatus comprises an anvil (40) and a cutter support member (31) carrying a blade (30), the cutter support member and the anvil being mounted for relative movement to bring the blade into contact with a facing surface of the anvil. The facing surface has a stepped portion (40) over which the tape is bent during cutting such that when the tape is released the first and second layers tend to separate from one another at the cut edge.

  • Patent number: 5420385
Abstract: A key operable safety switch includes a housing and a switch operator that is operated by an actuator. A slot in the housing receives the actuator. A plurality of discs independently rotatably mounted on an axle, the discs each having a radial recess aligned with the slot and cam-like control grooves, form a roller. The actuator has a coded pattern or actuation portions corresponding to each disc radial recess. Insertion of the actuator engages the actuation portions with the radial recesses causing the discs to be rotated as a whole. A pin mounted to the switch operator and transversely disposed in the control grooves is axially displaced by rotation of the discs. The switch operator is displaced a predetermined stroke to actuate the switch.
