    Abstract: A method for coding clinical input data by a charge capture system comprises the steps of receiving clinical input data from a clinical input data source, the clinical input data including interpretations of measured data; providing one or more coding algorithms; dividing the interpretations of measured data into phrases; and processing the phrase through a pattern matcher that matches one or more elements of the phrase to an initial code. The method further includes the steps of processing the initial codes to generate a corresponding one or more billing codes; if more than one billing code is determined, ranking the billing codes in an order of significance to determine a highest ranked billing code; and providing one of the one billing code and the highest ranked billing code to a billing system.
