Publication number: 20230076738Abstract: Techniques described herein may enable a user equipment (UE) to optimize radio access technology (RAT) and radio resources (e.g., bandwidth parts (BWPs)) when communicating with the network. This may be based on one or more factors or conditions, such as whether the UE is currently using 4th generation (4G) RAT or 5th generation (5G) RAT, whether the UE is in an active mode or idle mode, a BWP used by the UE, whether an application or network service requires a certain throughput, a type of application being used by the UE, an amount of network congestion, and so on. RAT optimization may also be based on whether the UE is using a frequency range 1 (FR1) or frequency range 2 (FR2), whether the UE is stationary or moving, whether the UE is experiencing beam failures, uplink (UL) switches, link quality measurements (LQMs), reference signal received power (RSRP) measurements, and so on.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2022Publication date: March 9, 2023Inventors: Muthukumaran Dhanapal, Ajay Singh, Ajoy K. Patent number: 11277463Abstract: Apparatuses, systems, and methods for a wireless device to perform data stall mitigation. The wireless device may establish, at an HTTP layer of the wireless device, a data connection over a first network interface of the wireless device. The wireless device may compare an available duration of data in a data buffer associated with the data connection to a first threshold and notify, in response to the available duration approaching the first threshold, at least one lower layer of the wireless device of an emergency deadline. At least one lower layer may perform one or more remedial actions to avoid and/or mitigate a data stall.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2020Date of Patent: March 15, 2022Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Alan Tseng, Franco Travostino, Christoph Paasch, Vijay Venkataraman, Scott M. Marshall, Thomas F. Pauly, Darren S. Litzinger

Publication number: 20210392548Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for a wireless device to detect network bandwidth throttling and dynamically select a buffer threshold. The wireless device may establish a wireless link. Data for a downlink stream may be requested when an amount of buffered data for the stream is below a lower buffer threshold, received via the wireless link, and buffered. Data requests for the stream may be stopped when the amount of buffered data for the stream is above an upper buffer threshold. The upper buffer threshold may be selected based on characteristics of the wireless link and the stream. Throughput of the wireless link may also be monitored during multiple time windows, and the wireless device may determine whether the wireless link caps bandwidth below a bandwidth threshold based on the throughput monitoring.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2020Publication date: December 16, 2021Inventors: Raghuveer Mallikarjunan, Madhusudan Chaudary, Faraz Faheem, Rajesh Ambati, Ajay Singh, Muhammad A. Publication number: 20210263981Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for real-time or near real-time streaming of content using transfer protocols such as an HTTP compliant protocol. In one embodiment, a method includes dividing a stream of data, representing the contiguous time based content of a program (e.g. a live video broadcast), into a plurality of distinct media files, and generating a playlist file having a plurality of tags and Universal Resource Indicators (URIs) indicating an order of presentation of the plurality of distinct media files. The plurality of media files and the playlist file can be made available for transmission to a client device which can retrieve the media files using the playlist file.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2021Publication date: August 26, 2021Inventors: David Biderman, William May, JR., Alan Tseng, Roger Pantos, James David Batson

Publication number: 20200314161Abstract: Methods and apparatuses provide real-time or near real-time streaming of content, specified in one or more playlists, using transfer protocols such as an HTTP compliant protocol. In one embodiment, a method can adaptively determine a minimum overlap for an overlap in time between two streams being received concurrently in order to determine when to switch between the two streams, and the minimum overlap can be determined based on connection speed. In another embodiment, a minimum playlist duration can be set as a multiple of a target duration which specifies a maximum duration of a media file specified in a playlist. In another embodiment, a method can enforce a start point for playback at a client device.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2020Publication date: October 1, 2020Inventors: Roger Pantos, William B. May, JR., David Biderman, Alan Tseng

Patent number: 10693930Abstract: This document describes a protocol for transferring unbounded streams of multimedia data. It specifies the data format of the files and the actions to be taken by the server (sender) and the clients (receivers) of the streams. It describes version 2 of this protocol.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2018Date of Patent: June 23, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Roger Pantos, William B. May, Jr., David Biderman, Alan Tseng

Patent number: 10523726Abstract: Methods and apparatuses provide real-time or near real-time streaming of content, specified in one or more playlists, using transfer protocols such as an HTTP compliant protocol. In one embodiment, a method can execute a user application on a client device to present media files and to control presentation of the media files. The method can further run a media serving process on the client device to retrieve a playlist specifying the media files and a media source at which the media files are available, to retrieve the media files from the media source, and to decode the media files retrieved. The media serving process can call the user application to process a custom URL in order to obtain an object referred to by the custom URL.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2016Date of Patent: December 31, 2019Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Roger Pantos, Alan Tseng, William May, Jr., James David Batson
