  • Publication number: 20220127198
Abstract: Methods of flash sintering have been developed in which particle are initially coated with thin layers by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Examples are provided in which 8 mol % yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) particles are coated with small quantities of Al2O3 by particle atomic layer deposition (ALD). Sintered materials that result from the process have been characterized. Sintered materials having unique characteristics are also described.

  • Publication number: 20080086946
Abstract: Methods for carrying out high temperature reactions such as biomass pyrolysis or gasification using solar energy. The biomass particles are rapidly heated in a solar thermal entrainment reactor. The residence time of the particles in the reactor can be 5 seconds or less. The biomass particles may be directly or indirectly heated depending on the reactor design. Metal oxide particles can be fed into the reactor concurrently with the biomass particles, allowing carbothermic reduction of the metal oxide particles by biomass pyrolysis products. The reduced metal oxide particles can be reacted with steam to produce hydrogen in a subsequent process step.

  • Publication number: 20070280895
Abstract: Particles have an ultrathin, conformal coating are made using atomic layer deposition methods. The base particles include ceramic and metallic materials. The coatings can also be ceramic or metal materials that can be deposited in a binary reaction sequence. The coated particles are useful as fillers for electronic packaging applications, for making ceramic or cermet parts, as supported catalysts, as well as other applications.

  • Publication number: 20060188433
Abstract: The invention provides methods for reduction of metal oxide particles using a high temperature solar aerosol reactor. The invention also provides metal-oxide based processes for the generation of hydrogen from water splitting using a high temperature solar aerosol reactor. In addition, the invention provides solar thermal reactor systems suitable for use with these processes.

  • Publication number: 20060140848
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for carrying out high temperature thermal dissociation reactions requiring rapid-heating and short residence times using solar energy. In particular, the present invention provides a method for carrying out high temperature thermal reactions such as dissociation of hydrocarbon containing gases and hydrogen sulfide to produce hydrogen and dry reforming of hydrocarbon containing gases with carbon dioxide. In the methods of the invention where hydrocarbon containing gases are dissociated, fine carbon black particles are also produced. The present invention also provides solar-thermal reactors and solar-thermal reactor systems.
