  • Patent number: 9891719
Abstract: A docking station configured to mate to an electronic device enables methods of interacting with the electronic device by impacting (e.g., knocking) on a table on which the device and/or the docking station are disposed and by means of contactless gestures. The electronic device may remain in a powered off state while the docking station continuously monitors for user input. The docking station may have a processor that is capable of detecting a user's impact and contactless gesture inputs.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 6, 2017
Date of Patent: February 13, 2018
    Assignee: Apple Inc.
Inventors: Darshan R. Kasar, Greg Nayman, Robert Doran Watson, James L. McPeak, Edwin Foo, Albert Golko, Jeffrey J. Terlizzi

  • Patent number: 8931962
Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to connectors such as audio connectors and in particular to a dual orientation audio connector with side audio contacts that can be used in place of standard audio connectors. The connector has an intuitive insertion orientation and a smooth, consistent feel when inserted and extracted from its corresponding receptacle connector. A corresponding connector jack may be configured to receive the dual orientation audio connector.

  • Patent number: 8866679
Abstract: Certain embodiments may take the form of an electronic device having a metal housing encapsulating operative circuitry for the device. The electronic device includes an attachment member coupled to the metal housing at an attachment point. An antenna is coupled to the attachment member and communicatively coupled to the operative circuitry in the metal housing via the attachment point to enable the electronic device to communicate wirelessly.

  • Publication number: 20130084382
Abstract: Cable structures can be formed for cables and other components that include non-cable components such as jacks and headphones. The cable structure includes an outer jacket that is formed from a silicon polymer-based material that is extruded to form a jacket that completely encapsulates a conductive bundle. The cable structures utilizing silicon polymer-based materials can be simple two-ended cables or they can include several legs connected at a point of bifurcation. The extrusion process can be used to manufacture the multiple legs even if they are to be formed of different dimensions. As the silicon polymer-based material is processed by an extruder, one or more system factors of the extruder can be dynamically adjusted to change the diameter of the resulting leg (e.g., to provide a smooth leg having a changing size).
