  • Patent number: 11596421
Abstract: An ankle arthroplasty system may have a talar prosthesis and a tibial prosthesis, each of which has an articular surface and a bone engagement surface. Each bone engagement surface may have an anterior-posterior curvature and a medial-lateral curvature with a convex shape. A burr with a rotatable cutting element may be used to form a prepared surface on the talus or the tibia to receive the corresponding prosthesis. A cutting guide may be used to guide motion of the burr; the cutting guide may include a base and an arm movably coupled to the base. One of the base and the arm may have a guide surface, and the other may have a follower that slides along the guide surface to constrain motion of the burr such that the prepared surface has at least one concave curvature and one convex curvature.

  • Patent number: 7625409
Abstract: A fixed-bearing ankle prosthesis may include tibial and talar components whose articulating surfaces directly contact one another. The tibial component defines medial and lateral concave condylar facets separated by a convex central portion. The talar component includes medial and lateral convex condyles separated by a concave central portion. The condyles each have a single radius of curvature in a medial-lateral plane such that each condyle has a circular-arc cross-section continuously extending from the respective medial or lateral edge of the talar component to the concave central portion. The medial-lateral radii of the condyles are smaller than corresponding radii of the condylar facets.

  • Patent number: 6730128
Abstract: The present invention is directed to prosthetic knee joints having femoral and tibial components. More particularly, in one embodiment the knee joint prosthesis of the present invention includes an auxiliary pair of load bearing surfaces in addition to other load bearing surfaces of the tibial and femoral components, which are the medial tibial and femoral condyles, the lateral tibial and femoral condyles, and the central tibial and femoral cam surfaces. The auxiliary pair of load bearing surfaces are located on the tibial component, posterior (i.e, on the rear side of the knee joint) to the central cam, centered between the tibial condyles, and on the femoral component, posterior to the femoral central camming surface, centered between the femoral condyles.

  • Patent number: 6575980
Abstract: An instrument is provided for use in shaping a femur preparatory to implantation of a knee prosthesis. A gap checking device is fixed to the distal end of the patient's femur and referenced to the epicondyles of the femur. The gap checking device includes slots through which a cutting instrument can be passed to shape the femur so that it can receive the femoral component of the prosthesis. One of the slots enables the distal femoral cut to be made. The thickness of the gap checking device is selected so that the distance between the distal femoral cut and the distal surface of the gap checking device plus the thickness of a shim resting on the cut proximal tibia surface is equal to the combined thickness of the tibial and femoral components of the prosthesis. This enables balancing of the ligaments to be checked before the femoral cuts are made, but while the gap checking device is secured to the femur.

  • Patent number: 6500386
Abstract: A method for preserving a component including polymeric material that reduces oxidation degradation after irradiation. The method includes sealing the polymeric material in a container filled with a fluid, preferably a liquid. Monitoring the integrity of the container's seal is enhanced by use of liquid rather than a gas. The method can be used for long term storage of orthopaedic implants which include polymeric material, especially Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene.
