    Abstract: A method of reducing the activity of non-volatile mutagens, in chlorinated water, such as chlorinated drinking water and municipal and industrial waste water, by sulfite treatment. The chlorinated water is treated with a stoichiometric excess of sulfur dioxide or soluble sulfite or bisulfite salt sufficient to dechlorinate the water and at least partially destroy the mutagens present.
