Patent number: 6741169Abstract: A tire monitoring method and apparatus is provided to predict tire tread separation for a tire on a wheel of a vehicle. This may involve monitoring a parameter of a tire of a vehicle over time and comparing information regarding the monitored parameter (over time) with a reference threshold value of the parameter (over time). The method may also include providing information to a driver based on the comparison. The parameter may be acceleration (axial, radial or longitudinal) along an axis of the tire. The parameter may also be tire imbalance, temperature inside the tire, speed of the tire, load and/or pressure, for example. Information regarding the comparison may be transmitted to a driver if the monitored parameter exceeds the reference threshold value for a predetermined amount of time.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2001Date of Patent: May 25, 2004Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventors: Kiran R. Magiawala, Barry Dunbridge, George W. McIver, David L. Juzswik, Timothy DeZorzi, Albert M. Straub

Patent number: 6549125Abstract: An arrangement for provision of vehicle tire sensory information while a tire (12) is mounted on a wheel rim (10) of a vehicle. A sensor unit (16) includes a tire condition sensor (e.g., electronics 38), a signal transmitter (36), and a housing (20) that contains the sensor and the transmitter. The housing (20) has a mounting hole. A stud (18) is welded to the rim (10) and extends into the space bounded between the tire (12) and the rim (10). The stud extends through the mounting hole of the sensor housing (20). A retainer (e.g., 26) extends between the sensor housing (20) and the stud (18) such that the sensor housing is held fixed relative to the stud.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 2001Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignees: TRW Inc., TRW France SAInventors: Frederic Nigon, Robert Cheng, Alain Ponsot, Kamel Renault, Timothy DeZorzi, Albert M. Patent number: 6055855Abstract: An apparatus 10 mounts on a rim 11 of a vehicle wheel 13 on which a tire 12 may be mounted. The apparatus 10 comprises a tire pressure sensor 20, a first threaded fastener 30, and a tire valve stem 40. The tire pressure sensor 20 senses the pressure in the tire 12 and has a housing 21 with a pocket 22. The first threaded fastener 30 is mounted in the pocket 22 in the housing 21 and has a first threaded portion 31 extending along an axis 100. The first threaded fastener 30 and the housing 21 have surfaces 25, 26, 35 blocking rotation of the first threaded fastener 30 about the axis 100. The tire valve stem 40 projects through a first opening 17 in the rim 11 and through a second opening 27 in the housing 21 into the pocket 22. The tire valve stem 40 has a second threaded portion 41 for threaded engagement with the first threaded portion 31 upon relative rotation of the first 31 and second threaded portions 41 about the axis 100.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1999Date of Patent: May 2, 2000Assignee: TRW Inc.Inventor: Albert M. Patent number: 4517614Abstract: A mechanism for withdrawing magnetic recording tape from a tape carrier (e.g. a cartridge) is disclosed. A boom member supports at least two levers. In the at rest (unengaged) position, rollers, supported by the levers, are positioned in a recess in the tape cartridge and are positioned interior of the tape. When activated, the boom member pivots about its pivot point, thus moving the levers attached to it. The levers move generally away from the cartridge and the rollers attached to the levers engage the tape and pull tape out of the cartridge. The roller supporting ends of the levers engage a lever guide member in such a fashion that the at least two levers move apart. In this manner, a suitable transducer mounted adjacent the lever guide member, can have tape wrapped around itself (less than 360.degree.) for subsequent recording on or playback from the tape.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1982Date of Patent: May 14, 1985Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Albert M.
