  • Patent number: 4601837
Abstract: The process comprises in sequence the following steps: (a) introducing into a reaction zone a sulfonic acid comprising a neutral ammonium sulfonate; (b) adding to and mixing with said sulfonic acid a substantially inert diluent, an alkaline earth metal compound, water, and an alkanol to form a hydration mixture; (c) heating said hydration mixture at an elevated temperature to hydrate said alkaline earth metal compound; (d) adding a molybdenum-containing compound to said reaction zone at a time during the period beginning after the introduction of said sulfonic acid and extending through said refluxing of said hydration mixture; and (e) adding an acidic material to said reaction zone at a temperature within the range of about 26.7.degree. C. (80.degree. F.) to about 68.5.degree. C. (155.degree. F.) to form a molybdenum-alkaline earth metal sulfonate dispersion.

  • Patent number: 4113634
Abstract: Disclosed are a process for manufacturing metal diaryl dithiophosphates, certain metal diaryl dithiophosphates, and lubricating oil compositions containing said metal diaryl dithiophosphates. The process for the manufacture of metal diaryl dithiophosphate generally comprises reacting P.sub.2 S.sub.5 with a hydroxyl aryl compound to form a dithiophosphoric acid; and neutralizing said dithiophosphoric acid with zinc, barium, cadmium, magnesium or nickel base in the presence of an effective amount of a promoter, said promoter comprising dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid. Metal diaryl dithiophosphates, especially for use in lubricating oil compositions, can be made by the above process.

  • Patent number: 4104291
Abstract: Disclosed are a process for the manufacture of metal dithiophosphates especially the neutralization of dithiophosphoric acids, and also the product made by such process. The process for the continuous neutralization of dithiophosphoric acid with metal base comprises contacting dithiophosphoric acid with metal base to form a neutralization mixture; passing said neutralization mixture through a static mixer in order to achieve mixing of the neutralization mixture and substantial neutralization of said dithiophosphoric acid; cooling the substantially neutralized dithiophosphoric acid; and recovering metal dithiophosphate.

  • Patent number: 4031017
Abstract: This invention relates to a novel lubricant oil addition agent which is a phosphosulfurized C.sub.35 to C.sub.160 hydrocarbon modified N-(hydroxy and C.sub.50 - C.sub.160 alkyl-substituted benzyl) alkylene polyamine. Such novel addition agent imparts anti-oxidant and unexpected dispersancy functions to lubricant oils commonly used as crankcase lubricants for internal combustion engines. Such novel addition agent also imparts anti-oxidant and detergency functions to the less viscous oils used to lubricate automatic transmissions and at the same time prevent failure of the rubber seals used therein from deterioration (hardening) by oxidation and distortion softening by undue swelling. The present inventive addition agent unexpectedly provides both detergency and an anti-oxidant functions for lubricant oil which are superior to the related analog addition agent derived from the reaction of one molar proportion of a phosphosulfurized 500 to 2800 (Staudinger) molecular weight hydrocarbon with from 0.
