  • Patent number: 6100342
Abstract: A powder coating is prepared by (a) solvent polymerizing carboxy-functional acrylate copolymers, (b) separating and reacting the copolymers with a molar excess of at least one epihaloalkane, (c) removing excess epihaloalkane, (d) adding toluene and then reacting the copolymers with a sodium hydroxide solution to produce epoxy groups-containing acrylate copolymers having an epoxide number of from 0.018-0.501 eq/100 g copolymer, a weight average molecular weight of from 1000-30,000 and a Tg of from 20-120.degree. C.; and (e) extruding the epoxy groups-containing acrylate copolymers with a hardener such as aliphatic polybasic acids or anhydrides, or carboxy-functional polyesters or acrylic resins along with additives such as pigments or fillers.

  • Patent number: 5905119
Abstract: A method for making glycidyl ether-functional (meth)acrylate copolymers includes the step of reacting a hydroxyalkyl-functional (meth)acrylate copolymer with an epihalohydrin in the presence of a suitable catalyst. The reactants may be reacted by an addition reaction catalyzed with a Lewis acid catalyst, followed by dehydrohalogenation with aqueous alkali solution. Alternatively, the reactants may be reacted in a phase transfer reaction employing quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium phase transfer catalysts.

  • Patent number: 5872192
Abstract: Thermosetting powder coatings based on epoxide-containing acrylate copolymer resins are disclosed comprising:(A) an acrylate copolymer that contains glycidyl ether residues;(B) an aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic polybasic acid and/or a polyol-modified anhydride of a polybasic acid and/or an amorphous or semi-crystalline carboxy-functional copolyester resin and/or a carboxy-functional acrylic resin;(C) and, optionally, fillers and/or pigments and/or additives wherein the acrylate copolymer (A) has a molecular weight (Mw) of 1,000 to 30,000 and a glass transition temperature of 20 to 120.degree. C. and is obtainable by, in a first step, preparing a hydroxyl-functional acrylate copolymer (D), which copolymer is then transformed into the acrylate copolymer (A), by reaction with epihaloalkanes. The aforementioned compositions can be processed further to give thermosetting powder coatings which can be applied to substrates such as metal to form protective coatings or films.
