Patent number: 8381438Abstract: The present invention relates the methods, compositions and devices for priming of plant seed, preferably seed of crop plants, and seeds obtained with the methods, compositions and devices, wherein the metabolic activity necessary for germination of the seed is not controlled by water but rather by the partial oxygen pressure and/or partial carbon dioxide pressure. In the methods of the invention, the partial oxygen or carbon dioxide pressure may be measured by oxygen/carbon dioxide sensitive fluorescent dye. The invention further relates to processes for producing a primed seed lot of a plant species and to a container comprising primed seed under an atmosphere with a partial oxygen pressure that is below the critical oxygen pressure.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2008Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: FytagorasInventors: Albert Van Duijn, Johan Van Asbrouck

Patent number: 7748163Abstract: The invention relates to a method for treating seeds, comprising the following steps: (a) a sterilization step wherein, for 0.1 to 60 seconds and at a minimum pressure of 0.5 bar absolute, the seeds are contacted with a condensing medium having a condensation temperature of 80-200 DEG C, wherein the medium condenses on the seeds and the temperature of the surface of the seeds is raised to 200 DEG C at most; and (b) a cooling step wherein the sterilized seeds obtained in step (a) are cooled, wherein the temperature of the surface of the seeds is lowered, within 30 seconds at most, to 50 DEG C at most, and wherein the conditions of steps (a) and (b) are set such that the germination capacity of the seeds is relatively preserved or increases. The invention further relates to seeds obtainable with the method according to the invention.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2004Date of Patent: July 6, 2010Assignee: Nederlandse Organisatie Voor Toegepast-Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TnoInventors: Hendricus Cornelis van Deventer, Albert van Duijn, Rudy Mathias Henricus Heijmans

Publication number: 20090126268Abstract: The invention relates to a plant cultivating environment comprising: an oxygen sensing arrangement for sensing an oxygen level in said environment. According to the invention, said oxygen sensing arrangement comprises a base plate for underlying a substrate; and a plurality of oxygen sensors each positioned on said base plate at a predetermined position for sensing a local oxygen level in said substrate. In this way, a water irrigation strategy can be based on sensed levels at a plurality of positions.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2006Publication date: May 21, 2009Applicant: Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast- natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNOInventors: Albert Van Duijn, Wessel Luitje Holtman, Arie Draaijer

Publication number: 20060185237Abstract: A growing material for plants comprising a coherent substrate material for including and therein roots of a plant to be supported by the substrate material, wherein in the substrate, locally, provisions (4) have been embedded which are manufactured from a material impenetrable by roots and are, at least partly, surrounded by material penetrable by roots, thereby forming, locally, embedded, in the substrate for the roots, a layer in the form of a porous net-shaped or sieve-shaped barrier so that during growing the roots are forced to deflect and bend through the porous net-shaped or sieve-shaped barrier, thereby spreading over the substrate material in an optimal manner and growing roots therein more intensively.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2004Publication date: August 24, 2006Applicant: Netherlandse Organisatie voor toegepast- natuurweten schappelijk Onderzoek TNOInventors: Rene van der Meulen, Davy de Witt, Albert van Duijn

Publication number: 20040033575Abstract: The invention relates to methods for measuring metabolic states or rates or changes therein, such as growth rates, dying rates, cell division, metabolite production, and other biological activities of organisms, in particular of small multi-cellular organisms, of seeds and seedlings and of micro-organisms, such as fungi, yeast, bacteria, plant or animal cells and cultures thereof. The invention provides a method for determining a change in metabolic rate of at least one organism comprising placing said organism or part thereof in a confined container and repeatedly or continually measuring the concentration of a metabolic gas in said confined container to determine changes in consumption or production of said gas by said organism wherein said gas concentration is determined without essentially affecting the concentration of said gas in said confined container.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 24, 2002Publication date: February 19, 2004Inventors: Albert Van Duijn, Johan Willem Konig

Patent number: 6325361Abstract: In order to bring a gas and a liquid into contact with one another, for example so as to exchange, remove or add components or calorific value present in the gas and/or liquid, the liquid is guided along one or more walls which are provided with small openings, and the gas is guided into the liquid, via these openings, by allowing this liquid to flow along the walls or by moving the walls along the liquid. In order to increase the contact time between gas and liquid, the gas is guided into the liquid in a direction which essentially corresponds to the direction of movement of the liquid with respect to the wall which is provided with openings. A venturi effect is generated in the region of the openings, since subatmospheric pressure is produced at the location where the openings open into the stream of liquid.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1999Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Inventor: Albert Van Duijn
