Publication number: 20100150851Abstract: Novel compositions comprising anionic-cationic complexes as conditioning agents for use in products that improve the appearance and feel of skin and hair are well known. This invention describes the use of additional cationic surfactant in combination with an anionic-cationic complex made from a fatty alkyl dialkylamine and a “dicarboxylic acid”, preferably a dimer acid. This combination provides exceptional conditioning for hair, improving both wet and dry combing. It also makes very stable oil-in-water emulsions, and adds a slippery feel and lubricity to shaving and skin cleaning products.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2008Publication date: June 17, 2010Applicant: ALZO INTERNATIONAL, INC.Inventors: Albert A. Zofchak, John Carson, Paul Slavashevich

Publication number: 20070202072Abstract: The invention provides personal care products comprising fatty ethoxylated dimeric urethane compounds that enhance the viscosity of constituent water based surfactant systems. In compositions and methods of the invention, ethoxylated nonionic, urethane dimers increase the viscosity of water based surfactant systems and serve as thickeners. These thickeners produce clear solutions in combination with surfactants and can be made sufficiently water soluble to produce clear solutions in water. The thickeners are compatible with anionic, cationic, amphoteric and nonionic surfactants and are functional and stable over a wide pH range.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 8, 2004Publication date: August 30, 2007Applicant: ALZO INTERNATIONAL, INC.Inventors: Albert Zofchak, John Carson, Jebadiah Jorden

Patent number: 7135165Abstract: The instant invention relates to novel surfactant-free, multiphase sunscreen compositions that provide protection from the sun, have a unique visual appeal, and provide skin conditioning and moisturization. In a two-phase embodiment of the instant invention, the compositions are comprised of (1) a first layer comprising a high-density ester and sunscreen, and (2) a second aqueous layer, which is usually the top layer. In a three-phase embodiment of the instant invention, the compositions are comprised of (1) a first layer comprising a high-density ester and and sunscreen, (2) a second aqueous layer, and (3) a third oily layer. The high-density ester layer usually has a specific gravity that is greater than that of the aqueous layer and the aqueous layer usually has a specific gravity that is greater than the oily layer. In preferred embodiments, each phase is substantially clear and has a volume approximately equal to that of the other phase(s).Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2002Date of Patent: November 14, 2006Assignee: ALZO International, Inc.Inventors: Albert Zofchak, John C. Carson

Patent number: 7101954Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition and use of polymeric urethane esters quats as an active ingredient for skin and hair contacting personal care compositions and products related thereto. These compositions are generally produced by the reaction of a trialkanolamine with a hydroxy fatty acid to produce a trialkanolamine fatty acid ester, which is then polymerized with a diisocyanate and in preferred embodiments, further reacted with a quaternizing agent to produce preferred quaternized compositions according to the present invention.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2002Date of Patent: September 5, 2006Assignee: Alzo International, Inc.Inventors: Albert A. Zofchak, John Obeji

Patent number: 7087700Abstract: The present invention is directed to compositions comprising polymeric tertiary amines of urethane esters and salts thereof. The compositions are generally derived from linear or branched chain compounds of synthetic or natural origin, preferably from trialkalnolamines that have been esterified with organic acids including long chain fatty acids and reacted with diisocyanate compounds to form urethane adducts. These adducts are in turn polymerized with organic acids to form polymeric urethane ester tertiary amine salts. The compositions of the present invention may be incorporated into personal care formulations such as cosmetics, toiletries and shampoos and into detergents to improve or modify at least two of the characteristics of such formulations.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2002Date of Patent: August 8, 2006Assignee: Alzo International, Inc.Inventors: Albert Zofchak, John Obeji

Publication number: 20060127344Abstract: The use of novel nonionic polymeric thickeners that produce cosmetically useful emulsions of an oil phase and a water phase is described. The thickeners of choice are the urethane dimers of ethoxylated fatty alcohols. These materials were not anticipated to have emulsifying properties. Also, it has been found that the esters of ethoxylated polyols show similar emulsifying behavior, although their uses are limited by their inherent susceptibility towards hydrolysis. Further, many of the emulsions produced with these emulsifiers have a dilatant or shear thickening rheology that is unusual and has unique cosmetic applications. In addition, it is possible to produce high internal phase oil-in-water emulsions, with oil phase concentrations greater than 70%, using these emulsifiers. Finally, many of the emulsions, especially the high internal phase ones, have a characteristic “ring” or vibration that is apparent when their container is tapped.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2005Publication date: June 15, 2006Inventors: Albert Zofchak, Paul Slavashevich, John Carson

Publication number: 20050169874Abstract: The invention provides polymeric emulsifiers that: are useful in the manufacture of personal care products such as skin creams, sunscreens, hair conditioners and shampoos; have similar aesthetic properties as conventional surfactants when used in personal care product applications; and that are relatively free of the drawbacks associated with known anionic or nonionic polymeric emulsifiers. In certain embodiments, the invention provides o/w or w/o emulsions comprising cationic polyurethane emulsifiers (surfactants) or combinations of cationic polyurethane emulsifiers and conventional low HLB emulsifiers. Emulsions of the invention are useful as components of personal care products such as hair and skin care products and are functional and stable over a wide pH range.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 14, 2005Publication date: August 4, 2005Inventors: Albert Zofchak, John Carson
