  • Patent number: 8202225
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for noninvasively estimating a blood pressure are provided. A bandpass filter is applied to a second heart sound (S2) component to generate a filtered S2 component. The bandpass filter has a lower cutoff frequency greater than a maximum frequency of the S2 component. The maximum frequency of the S2 component is estimated using the filtered S2 component, a predetermined relationship is applied between the estimated maximum frequency and blood pressure to generate a blood pressure estimate and the blood pressure estimate is displayed.

Abstract: Materials, methods and apparatus for treating a body cavity. The present invention relates to materials, methods and apparatus for treating a body cavity or passageway. In particular, the invention relates to materials, methods and apparatus for treating a body cavity which has been subjected to some sort of trauma, such as surgery, resulting in a wound surface. The apparatus preferably comprises a two syringe sterilised package. One of the syringes contains CMC yarn which is converted to a CMC gel composition by mixing with water. The second syringe is used to measure water and mix it with the CMC yarn when connected to the yarn-containing syringe. When mixed, the CMC gel composition can be applied to a body cavity.

  • Patent number: 6749576
Abstract: The invention relates to a biopsy device having the ability to adjust the size of the sample to be removed. The biopsy device includes biopsy needle assembly and cannula insertion guide co-axially aligned therewith such that longitudinal adjustment of the cannula insertion guide likewise adjusts the exposure of the stylet and cutting edge of the biopsy needle assembly thereby changing the size of the resulting sample. A longitudinal adjusting element is positioned between and connects the cannula insertion guide and housing of the device. The invention is particularly useful in biopsy procedures where improved control over sample size and cutting stroke are desirable.

  • Patent number: RE38776
Abstract: A surgical instrument in the form of a biopsy needle for removing tissue samples from a patient. The device has means for preloading to excise tissue samples of a preselected one of many possible tissue sample sizes. After preloading, the procedure is easily accomplished using a single hand. The tip is rendered less traumatic by positioning the distal end of the tissue sample notch relatively close to the very distal tip of the stylet. This is accomplished by grinding the distal tip of the stylet into an elliptical shape in a plane having a lateral projection which is away from the distal end of the tissue sample notch.
