  • Patent number: 8072915
Abstract: A CDMA communication system supports designated mode data bursts and contention-based transmissions on a reverse link common channel from a subscriber unit to a base station. When transmissions are scheduled and serviced in the designated mode data burst, collisions are avoided. The number of slots consumed in the designated mode data bursts depend upon the volume of data the subscriber unit has to transmit to the base station. A common power control channel provides power control bits and reservation indications for at least one reverse link common channel for closed loop reverse link power control on the common channels.

  • Publication number: 20080056269
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and devices for a social networking device 102. The methods include calculating a value for a social networking index 460 for contacts in a contact list 103, and prioritizing a subset of contacts 462. IP addresses of contacts retrieved 468 from the Internet according to the social networking index can be preloaded 470 for the initiation of an IP based communication 474. The social networking index is generated from values of predetermined statistics 130 associated with contacts of the contact list. The statistics associated with contacts of a contact list include 464 a number of communications with a contact, a statistical value calculated from lengths of communications with a contact, a time since a last communication with a contact and a statistical value calculated from times between at least two consecutive communications with a contact. Calculating a social networking index 460 can include applying weights 466 with which to combine the values of the predetermined statistics.

  • Publication number: 20080037521
Abstract: A mobile station having a Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol client sends a message proposing a frame packing and frame repeating parameter set (1001). The called client may either accept the proposal or offer a revision (1003). If accepted the VoIP call is established (1009). If a revised proposal is received, it is determined whether the parameters are acceptable (1005). If not the call is declined (1007). If acceptable the call may proceed (1011). Both clients may then monitor network conditions (1013) and propose revisions to the parameters as conditions change. In this way, the VoIP application layer compensates for physical and Medium Access Control (MAC) layer inefficiencies in transporting the small frames used for audio data transfer for VoIP.

  • Patent number: 7305609
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of and apparatus for increasing the capacity of a wireless communication system. This is accomplished by having users that can support a higher than base modulation order be required to do so under predetermined conditions such as electrical distance from a base transceiver station (BTS) antenna to a user, the reception of data in a high speed burst (HSD) and the like. The same digital processor apparatus that may be used to provide a base order modulation scheme may be reprogrammed in a more complex fashion to provide signal processing at the higher modulation rate for any given user channel.

  • Publication number: 20050265350
Abstract: This concurrent packet data session set-up for Push-to-talk over Cellular (PoC) services decreases the connection set-up time for a PoC call by using processes that are circuit-switched-based to locate and page a called communication device, and to initiate traffic and packet data session set-ups for the called communication device. A method for setting up a packet data session between an originating communication device (211) and a called communication device (215) includes the steps of: requesting a called-device active packet data session set-up for the called communication device (messages 271, 272, 273, 274, 275) and initiating an originating-device active packet data session set-up for the originating communication device (messages 271, 222, 224). The first step can use circuit-switched-based messages and processes to locate the called communication device and set up a traffic channel for the called communication device.

  • Publication number: 20050143111
Abstract: A method of determining PTT availability of members of a contact list in a wireless PTT communication system makes efficient use of resources by updating client devices (118, 122, 126) with new PTT contact list status information only when necessary. The availability of client devices (118, 122, 126) associated with contact lists (528, 530, 532) are determined by a PTT controller (112) according to the content of messages from the client devices (118, 122, 126). New information regarding the availability of a client device associated with a contact list (528, 530, 532) is transmitted to relevant client devices (118, 122, 126) only when a change has occurred in the availability of a member. Likewise, a client device (118, 122, 126) notifies the PTT controller 112 of its availability only when a change occurs.

  • Patent number: 6614779
Abstract: A new access channel protocol for use in cellular systems such as CDMA whereby the data transfer efficiency of an access message is increased by removing the requirement that a preamble frame and a message capsule frame have equal times of duration. With such removal, the BTS must inform listening MSs as to the time duration of the frames in each of the preamble and the message portions of the access channel time slot in addition to previously supplied information as to the number of frames in each portion. When unequal frame duration times are allowed, each portion of the access channel may be more nearly optimized to the actual time required to perform the functions of synchronization and message detection.

  • Patent number: 6519233
Abstract: A CDMA communication system supports designated mode data bursts on a reverse link contention based channel from a subscriber unit to a base station. The reverse link contention based channel also supports contention-based transmissions from the subscriber unit to the base station. When transmissions are scheduled and serviced in the designated mode data burst, collisions are avoided. Further, because setting up the designated mode data bursts on the reverse link contention based channel require little overhead as compared to the setup of a traffic channel the CDMA system is operated at a greater efficiency. The reverse link contention based channel may be a Reverse Common Control Channel, a Reverse Access Channel or another contention-based channel. Designated mode data bursts on the reverse link contention based channel may consume a single slot or multiple slots.

  • Patent number: 6519266
Abstract: A communications system and method that separates operational aspects of a packet data service to be provided on a wireless network into separate, independent state diagrams. The method first decomposes the communication service into several different service layers. The method then defines a dynamic behavior of the service layers and an interaction therebetween. Once the behavior and interaction between the layers is defined, the method creates a control element with which to coordinate the service layers.

  • Patent number: 6097712
Abstract: In a receiver of a simulcast multi-carrier CDMA (code division multiple access) communications system, a combined data signal is produced by combining signals representing data received for the plurality of carriers and is multiplied by the complex conjugate of a composite reference signal, representing characteristics of the plurality of carriers, produced by combining signals representing a reference signal received for the plurality of carriers, thereby improving multi-path resolution due to frequency diversity of the reference signal over the multiple carriers of the system. The receiver can be simplified by demodulating the signals of the plurality of carriers in common to produce a demodulated signal which is common to the data and reference signals for the plurality of carriers, the data and reference signals being subsequently separated using their respective orthogonal codes.

  • Patent number: 5896411
Abstract: An enhanced mechanism for the reverse link power control in a wireless communication system, especially for high speed data applications and fixed wireless communication applications, dynamically adjusts the power control step size of the reverse link power control. The power control step size is dynamically adjusted based on various factors including types of service, number of reverse supplemental code channels, total received power at the base station, estimated diversity gain and required mobility, among others. The system which includes stationary infrastructure, can query a subscriber unit's capability in the support of a pre-defined set of power control step sizes before assigning it to the subscriber unit. Furthermore, the subscriber unit may decide its optimized power control step size based on certain feedbacks from the system.

  • Patent number: 5243227
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a delay line for providing fine timing adjustment on subsequent edges of an input signal. The delay line comprises a plurality of delay elements for fine tuning the position in time of the timing edges of the input signal. Each delay element has a data input and data output where the data output is connected to the subsequent delay element's data input, thereby forming a delay line with delay elements connected in series. This implementation facilitates the addition of fine increments of delay to be added to the input signal and thereby enable fine tuning of timing edges. Also, included is a wired-OR multiplexor having data inputs connected to the data outputs of the plurality of the delay elements and a control input to select a particular data output to thereby provide an output signal having delayed timing edges.
