Abstract: A process for the consolidation of discrete, particulate, low-melting or liquid materials, characterized in that said materials are consolidated in their particulate discrete form by application of vapors of at least one p-xylylene monomer and/or of a derivative thereof, which is polymerized under vacuum. The materials are thus given the surface characteristics of a solid, with enhanced properties of mechanical, physical and/or chemical strength, even in the presence of high temperatures. The invention is particularly useful for the metered addition of predetermined amounts of compositions or for moving mechanical parts.

Abstract: Process for consolidating solid materials and/or articles, which exhibit at least a low cohesion degree area associated with at least one structural discontinuity, debouching or opening into the surface and/or pervious from the surface of said material and/or article, with ports or openings having sizes equal to at least 0.01 micron, which process comprises:(a) introducing into said low-cohesion area associated with a structural discontinuity vapors of at least one p-xylylene monomer and/or a monomer derivative thereof, operating under vacuum, and(b) polymerizing said monomer vapors in situ inside said low-cohesion area associated with said structural discontinuity.

Abstract: Containers with low permeability to hydrocarbon vapors, and in particular to fuel vapors, having at least one surface coated with a p-xylylene polymer and/or its derivatives. The containers find use in the fuel industry and, in particular, in the automobile industry for the production of fuel tanks for cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles.

Abstract: Process for the adhesion of para-xylylene vapors to solid substrates by the use of an unsaturated ester of phosphoric acid of the formula: ##STR1## wherein at least one of the radicals R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is hydrogen and at least one of said radicals is:M--O--D--with M being a methacrylyl or acrylyl radical and D a straight or branched alkylene radical containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms, optionally halogen-substituted.
