  • Patent number: 9287710
Abstract: A method includes determining a desired power draw for a plurality of loads connected to an electrical grid, each of the plurality of loads connected to the electrical grid through a load supply control and being able to obtain a desired amount of energy from the grid in a desired time period, and transmitting a plurality of instructions through a communication network to a plurality of load supply controls to cause at least some of the loads in the plurality of loads to receive power from the electrical grid at different rates than other loads of the plurality of loads such that the desired power draw is obtained and such that each load of the plurality of loads receives its corresponding desired amount of energy in the desired time period.

  • Publication number: 20130014508
Abstract: Methods and systems for aiming heliostats toward a receiver. One of the methods includes directing a first subset of a set of heliostats to reflect solar rays toward a first location within an aperture of a receiver and directing a second subset of the set of heliostats to reflect solar rays toward one or more second locations within the aperture of the receiver. The solar rays reflected toward the first location provide solar heat to at least a first flow path of a working fluid in an engine assembly coupled to the receiver. The solar rays reflected toward the one or more second locations provide solar heat to a second flow path of the working fluid. The first and second flow paths correspond to heating at first and second stages respectively within the engine assembly, which is configured to generate power from the solar rays reflected to the receiver.

  • Publication number: 20120223531
Abstract: A power plant includes an engine coupled to a first generator and a second generator. The first generator includes a synchronous generator wherein the first generator is configured to provide reactive power to the second generator. The second generator includes an induction generator. One or more sensors are configured to measure a current output and a voltage output of the first and second generators, and a controller is configured to determine a power factor for the power plant based on the measured current output and voltage outputs. Based on the determined power factor, the controller adjusts the reactive power provided from the first generator to the second generator such that the power factor is maintained at a predetermined value.

  • Publication number: 20120204565
Abstract: A system includes a multi-stage compression engine including at least a first compressor and a second compressor and an intercooler positioned between the first compressor and the second compressor. The intercooler includes an air inlet configured to receive heated air from the first compressor and direct the heated air to a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is configured to receive the heated air and to expel cooled air, wherein a cooling fluid is directed through the heat exchanger. An air outlet is configured to receive the cooled air and direct the cooled air to the second compressor. A chimney is positioned above the heat exchanger and adapted to capture the cooling fluid that is heated after having passed through the heat exchanger. A natural convection created in the chimney by the captured heated cooling fluid tends to draw the cooling fluid through the heat exchanger.

  • Publication number: 20120192857
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on one or more computer storage devices, for collecting solar energy using heliostats arranged about a collection of solar energy receivers. For each heliostat, estimated efficiencies of the heliostat in directing solar rays to two or more receivers at various times of day are determined. Each heliostat is assigned to direct solar rays to two or more different receivers at two or more different times of day, wherein each heliostat directs solar rays to one receiver at a time and the assigning is based on the determined estimated efficiencies for the heliostat at the various of times of day. In some implementations, the receivers are repositionable.
