Publication number: 20080161001Abstract: A method of effecting handoff of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises measuring at the mobile station a parameter of a signal transmitted by said first base station and a parameter of a signal transmitted by said second base station. When the parameters reach a predetermined condition, a signal quality message is communicated from the mobile station via the first base station to said first mobile switching control station, which responds by generating information for a channel request message for the second mobile switching control station and transmitting the same to the mobile station.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2008Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: QUALCOMM INCORPORATEDInventors: Alejandro R. Patent number: 7054628Abstract: A method of using a ciphering key in a mobile station (18) from a first base station (12) in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control (10) station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises generating for the mobile station a cipher key for use by the mobile station during communication in the second cellular communications system. The cipher key is generated by the mobile station from a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and from a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. The cipher key is then communicated to the first mobile system and a private long code is generated for use by the mobile station during communication in the first cellular communications system.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2002Date of Patent: May 30, 2006Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Alejandro R. Publication number: 20040236849Abstract: A network operator identifier is used to uniquely identify each network operator to support international roaming. The network operator identifier includes (1) a Mobile Country Code (MCC) that identifies the country in which a network operator belongs and (2) a Network Operator Code (NOC), which may be a Mobile Network Code (MNC), that distinguishes network operators within a given MCC. Each network operator is assigned a unique combination of MCC and NOC that distinctly identifies the network operator, and the network operator identifier can be stored in a single entry in a preferred roaming list. The base stations of each network operator broadcast the network operator identifier in signaling messages. A mobile station receives a signaling message from a base station, obtains the network operator identifier, searches its preferred roaming list for an entry with the network operator identifier, and determines whether or not the current CDMA network is accessible.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2003Publication date: November 25, 2004Inventors: Rotem Cooper, Alejandro R. Holcman, Andrew T. Hunter, Edward G. Tiedemann, Nobuyuki Uchida, Vera Kripalani

Patent number: 6115607Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing messaging traffic, including air and network messaging, in a wireless communication system. The invention informs a mobile station of its subscription status, either active or inactive, within the communication system. If the mobile station subscription status is inactive, the mobile station is prevented from registering with the communication system. All other functions of the inactive mobile remain enabled, such as the ability to make emergency calls, to change the subscription status to active status, or to allow for base station maintenance control.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventor: Alejandro R. Holcman

Patent number: 5844899Abstract: To provide an unique call ID number in a system comprised of a plurality of entities through which a connection may be established, each entity through which a connection can be initiated is capable of assigning a unique number to a new connection. For example a first entity receives a first request to initiate a first connection and assigns a first unique number to said first connection. The first unique number comprises the identity of the first entity, a time at which the first request was received, a distinction of the first request from any other request received at the first entity in a time block during which said first request was received, and an indication of a system with which the first entity is associated.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1996Date of Patent: December 1, 1998Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Robert S. Daley, Alejandro R. Holcman, Barry R. Robbins, Noam A. Ziv

Patent number: 5754542Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in a multi-mode subscriber station. In the exemplary embodiment, the subscriber station capable of operating in both CDMA and analog modes comprises a analog modulation and demodulation and processing element and a CDMA modulation and demodulation and processing element and a system determination element. System determination element examines exit parameters provided by the communication element exited and determines the next system upon which to attempt acquisition in accordance with a system preferences table, a CDMA channel table and a non-volatile memory element.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1995Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Jan C. Patent number: 5566357Abstract: The filter of the present invention pre-processes signaling messages transmitted by the base station while the radiotelephone is in the idle mode. The radiotelephone informs the filter of the roam status and idle status and identity of the radiotelephone. The filter then intercepts the incoming signaling messages while the processor is in the sleep mode conserving power. When the filter detects a message requiring further processing by the processor, the filter interrupts the processor to process the message.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1994Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventor: Alejandro R. Holcman

Patent number: 5509035Abstract: A method of mobile station synchronization to a system time, wherein the time alignment is attained while the mobile station operates in analog mode. The mobile stations transmits a periodic signal, each period of which has a leading edge. The base station detects the leading edge of the periodic signal and compares it to an indication of system time. The base station generates an error message for the mobile station indicating an update to the phase of the periodic signal. When the mobile station and the base station are time aligned, the base station may send a message indicating the absolute time at some future leading edge of the periodic signal thereby eliminating ambiguities of time due to the finite time required to receive the message.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1995Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Edward G. Teidemann, Jr., Alejandro R. Holcman
