Patent number: 9253653Abstract: An access point is configured based on signals received from one or more access points on a forward link. Such an access point may comprise, for example, a relatively small coverage area access point and/or an access point that is deployed in an ad-hoc manner. In some aspects, an access point may determine its location based on signals received from several neighboring macro access points. In some aspects, the timing of an access point may be synchronized to timing indicated by signals that are received from one or more neighboring access points.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2008Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Aleksandar M. Patent number: 9198122Abstract: System and method are provided for redirecting a communication device between a macro network and a femtocell network using a service redirection message (SRDM). In an embodiment, the communication device registers with the network which then determines the subscription status of the communication device to a femtocell network. If the subscription is confirmed, using the SRDM the system redirects the communication device to a communication frequency used by the femtocell network. Upon receipt of the SRDM, the communication devices tunes to a communication frequency specified in the SRDM. The system may segregate the CDMA channels used by the macro network, one set containing channels exclusive to the macro network and the other containing channel or channels used by both the macro network and the femtocell network. In this way, the communication device is prevented from entering a frequency re-hashing loop.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2008Date of Patent: November 24, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Aleksandar M. Patent number: 9173148Abstract: Identification of an access point to which an access terminal is to be handed-off involves, in some aspects, identifying one access point of a set of access points that may have been detected by an access terminal. For example, an access terminal may receive a signal having an identified characteristic (e.g., a particular phase offset) from an access point. Each access point of a set of access points associated with the identified characteristic may be directed to attempt to decode a signal from the access terminal. The access point of the candidate set to use for the handoff operation may then be determined based on the signal received from the access terminal, if any, by each of the candidate access points.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2008Date of Patent: October 27, 2015Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Aleksandar M. Gogic

Patent number: 8886200Abstract: Ambiguity (e.g., confusion) associated with access point identifiers may be resolved by querying candidate target access points and/or by using historical records indicative of one or more access points that the access point has previously accessed. For example, messages may be sent to access points that are assigned the same identifier to cause the access points to monitor for a signal from an access terminal that received the identifier from a target access point. The target access point may then be identified based on any responses that indicate that a signal was received from the access terminal. A mapping may be maintained for that access terminal that maps the identifier to that access point so that the mapping may be used to resolve any future confusion associated with the use of that identifier by that access terminal.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2009Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Aleksandar M. Gogic, Chandrasekhar T. Sundarraman, Sanjiv Nanda, Peerapol Tinnakornsrisuphap, Rajarshi Gupta

Patent number: 8798008Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device that measures characteristics or attributes of a first communications network that vary according to physical location within that first communications network to create a fingerprint, or signature, of a location within the first communications network. When the fingerprint of the current location of the mobile device is created it can be compared to a known fingerprint associated with a second communication network to determine the mobile device's proximity to the second communications network. For example, the first communications network may be a CDMA wide area wireless communication network and the second communications network may be a 802.11 wireless LAN.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2013Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Sanjiv Nanda, Aleksandar M. Publication number: 20140198755Abstract: A radio frequency receive chain of an access point is reused for different functions. For example, the same RF receive chain may be used to receive on a downlink at certain points in time and on an uplink at other points in time. An RF receive chain that is used to derive synchronization from downlink signals received from a macro system also may be used to receive uplink signals from an access terminal to provide assistance for hand-in of the access terminal. Accelerated searching for hand-in may be provided through the use of a relatively small search window for hand-in of an access terminal to a small coverage access point. In some aspects, the search window may be defined based on the distance between access points or calibration of synchronization error between access points.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 14, 2014Publication date: July 17, 2014Applicant: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Chandrasekhar T. SUNDARRAMAN, Aleksandar M. GOGIC

Patent number: 8380169Abstract: A method for managing access to a macro mobile operator core network (250) by a guest terminal device (225) through a femto cell (210), and more particularly through a femto cell (210) connected to the Internet (240). When a guest terminal seeks guest access to network services at a site for example while a guest at a person's home, or a customer in a shop, or a traveler in a transportation station, access may be granted by information exchange between the proprietor of the site and the macro mobile operator core network (250). Access may be granted via the proprietor via a terminal device (220) connected wirelessly to the core network, or by any device connected to the Internet. Once access is granted, the guest terminal device (225) receives sufficient information to initiate communication with femto cells (210) in the proximity of the site, and thereby begin using Internet-based communication.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2008Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Aleksandar M. Publication number: 20110134833Abstract: Wireless transmission and/or other functions of an access point (e.g., a femto access point) are controlled based on whether an access terminal is in the vicinity of the access point. For example, wireless transmission may be enabled or disabled based on whether an authorized access terminal is inside or outside a perimeter associated with the access point. An access terminal may send a message to control wireless transmission and/or other functions of the access point based on signals (e.g., pilot signals) the access terminal receives from other access points. For example, the access terminal may determine whether it is inside or outside the perimeter based on comparison of phase information derived from received macro pilot signals with phase information maintained at the access terminal.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2009Publication date: June 9, 2011Applicant: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Aleksandar M.
