  • Patent number: 6870348
Abstract: An induction machine includes a rotor having rotor flux and a rotor resistance. The induction machine outputs first and second reference current values. A control system includes a first controller that outputs first and second reference voltage values to the induction machine and that generates an estimated rotor flux magnitude value based on a rotor resistance parameter. A computation circuit receives the first and second reference current values from the induction machine and the first and second voltage reference values from the first controller and calculates an actual rotor flux magnitude. A rotor resistance adjustor that updates the rotor resistance parameter based on the actual and estimated rotor flux magnitudes.

  • Patent number: 6492788
Abstract: A permanent magnet synchronous motor is controlled using d-axis current and q-axis current along with respective d-current and q-current feedback loops. The speed and position of the motor are determined by injecting a first signal into the d-axis current and observing the response in the q-current feedback loop. Part of the q-current feedback signal is demodulated with a second signal which is 90 degrees out of phase from the first signal. The demodulated signal is preferably sent through a low pass filter before being received by an observer controller. The observer controller outputs a position estimate which is used to modify the d-current feedback signal and a speed estimate which is used to modify the q-axis current.

  • Patent number: 5998957
Abstract: The invention provides a controller for specifying a drive voltage for synchronous motors relative to a desired speed profile. The controller senses motor current and optionally senses motor rotational position. A motor torque reference is first determined to balance (a) an estimated motor load torque, (b) the reference speed profile, and (c) a filtered incremental friction. A reference torque is then determined for the operating speed, and a reference current is determined to produce the reference torque. A primary voltage module then determines a primary voltage as a function of the calculated motor torque and the reference motor current to create a reference current at the operating speed. An incremental voltage module determines an incremental voltage based on an incremental resistance and an incremental back EMF of the motor. The primary and incremental voltages are then summed specify the applied voltage to drive the motor to the reference speed profile.

  • Patent number: 5510698
Abstract: Markov chain controlled random modulation of switching signal sequences of for a power converter. The control is implemented in a power converter having an energy storage device which receives an input power from a source and provides an output power to a load. The converter includes a switching device for coupling the input power source to the energy storage device or coupling the storage device to the load in response to receiving a sequence of control signals generated from a control signal generator.
