  • Patent number: 8903247
Abstract: A bidirectional interface for multimode optical fiber includes a receive/transmit optical fiber port operable to connect to a multimode optical fiber, a wavelength separating module in communication with the receive/transmit optical fiber port, an optical receiver module in communication with the wavelength separating module and configured to receive optical signals at a first wavelength via the wavelength separating module and the receive/transmit optical fiber port, and an optical transmit module in communication with the wavelength separating module and configured to transmit at a second wavelength via the wavelength separating module and the receive/transmit optical fiber port.

  • Patent number: 8452179
Abstract: An apparatus-transmitting signals in a network includes a light source generating an optical signal for encoding information transmitted over a light path of the network, a modulator controlling the optical signal to generate chirped optical pulses having a first frequency spectrum such that when the pulses are transmitted from the apparatus and received at an end of the first light path the pulses have a chromatic dispersion penalty that is less than a predetermined penalty. Modulation control circuitry receives instructions from a remote controller and, in response to the instructions, controls the modulator such that the chirped optical pulses have a second frequency spectrum such that when the pulses are transmitted from the apparatus and received at an end of a second light path of the telecommunications network the pulses have a chromatic dispersion penalty that is less than a predetermined penalty.

  • Patent number: 7643758
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing amplification to coarse wave division multiplexing channels or signals are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, an arrangement that adds gain to a set of signals that may be divided into a first band including signals of lower wavelengths and a second band including signals of higher wavelengths includes a multiplexer, first and second optical amplifiers, and a processing arrangement. The multiplexer multiplexes the set of signals. The first optical amplifier has a first gain peak and provides amplification to the set of signals, while the second optical amplifier has a second gain peak and provides amplification to the second band but not to the first band. The processing arrangement passes the second band from the first optical amplifier to the second optical amplifier, and substantially prevents the first band from passing from the first optical amplifier to the second optical amplifier.

  • Patent number: 7346280
Abstract: A bi-directional configuration is employed to implement a hybrid ultra long haul (ULH)/long haul (LH) optical transmission system. The link carries ULH channels and LH channels in opposite directions in different bands. Raman amplification is employed for the ULH band while Erbium-doped fiber amplification (EDFA) is used for both the LH and ULH bands. Optical circulators are employed for multiplexing and demultiplexing. This solution does not incur the ripple penalty of prior art solutions based on interferential filters while providing excellent isolation between the ULH and LH channels and bi-directional communication within a single fiber.
