Abstract: The present invention provides a method for assigning a mobile unit to a tracking area based upon a location update frequency. The method includes selecting one of a technology-specific tracking area and a shared tracking area based on a location update frequency associated with a mobile unit.

Abstract: In a method of detecting whether a given node supports a given protocol version, a source node sends a request message to the destination mode based on a first protocol version. The source node receives an indication message in reply to the request, and may detect that the destination node does not support the first protocol version based on the indication message. Accordingly communications may be established between a user of the wireless network and an external network via the source and destination nodes.

Abstract: A method is provided of sending a multicast message to mobile stations of a multicast group in cells of a radio telecommunications network. In each cell, a channel is selected for the multicast message. The multicast message is sent on the selected channel for reception by all the mobile stations of the multicast group in that cell. Preferably, the multicast message is only sent in those cells selected as containing mobile stations of the multicast group.

The method involves sending to an access point of a mobile telecommunications network a control message to assign a mobile station to a multicast group. The multicast message is sent to each of one or more access points, each having one or more associated mobile stations in the multicast group. Each access point forwards the multicast message to its associated one or more mobile stations in the multicast group.

Abstract: In an internet network running the protocol IPv6, the location of a mobile node MN is concealed by the provision of an intermediate node IN; the MN sends to the IN the home address of the mobile node and the visitor identity of the calling mobile, and the correspondent node address option of the called mobile as extension headers in the IPv6 header. The IN uses the extension header information as source and destination addresses on packets routed from the MN node to the CN node.
