Patent number: 6165800Abstract: A new class of chemiluminescent acridinium or benzacridinium compounds is disclosed by virtue of forming an intramolecular energy transfer conjugate (ETC) between the acridinium or benzacridinium compound and a luminophore. A method of extending the emission wavelengths of acridinium or benzacridinium esters in order to further reduce or eliminate the emission spectral overlap between the parent polysubstituted aryl Acridinium Esters (DMAE) and Benzacridinium Esters (LEAE) is disclosed. The ETC's retain the unique desired properties of acridinium or benzacridinium compounds including complete light emission in very short period of time, monophasic emission spectrum, simplicity of triggering mechanism, ability of labeling the biological molecules of interest to form a tracer, and good stability. Additionally, the range of the emission spectrum of an acridinium or benzacridinium compound can now be shifted at will and at longer leap through the choice of a luminophore as the integral part of an ETC molecule.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Bayer CorporationInventors: Qingping Jiang, Jun Xi, Anand Natrajan, David Sharpe, Marcus Baumann, Rolf Hilfiker, Erika Schmidt, Paul Senn, Fritz Thommen, Adrian Waldner, Alex Alder, Say-Jong Law

Patent number: 6143570Abstract: A composition comprising(a) a transparent support(b) which is coated on at least one side with a transparent coating which comprises(b1) a plasticizer-free, hydrophobic polymer having a glass transition temperature Tg of from -150 to 50.degree. C.,(b2) counterions in the form of lipophilic salts,(b3) an ionophore which forms a complex with the ion to be determined, and(b4) a compound of the formula I or II as fluorophore ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 and R.sub.6 are C.sub.1 -C.sub.30 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.30 alkyl-CO--, and R.sub.2 and R.sub.5 are H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.30 alkyl, with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms in the alkyl groups is at least 5, or a salt thereof with an inorganic or organic acid. The composition is highly suitable for the qualitative or quantitative optical determination of ions by fluorescence detection.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1999Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Novartis CorporationInventors: Alex Alder, Steven Barnard, Joseph Berger

Patent number: 5922612Abstract: A method for the independent, reversible, optical determination of the pH value and the ionic strength of an aqueous sample with the aid of two different sensors in accordance with the fluorescence method, in which method two optical sensors, which are each composed of polymers of different structure but each contain the same fluorescent dye and which each consist of a coated material composed ofa) a carrier material, to which there is appliedb) at least one water-insoluble layer of a polymer comprising at least one hydrophilic monomer (A) from the group of substituted olefins, andc) a proton-sensitive fluorescent dye which is bonded directly or via a bridge group to the spine of polymer b) or which is incorporated in polymer b),are brought into contact with an aqueous test sample, irradiated with exciting light, the fluorescence is measured and the pH values and the ionic strengths are calculated from the measured fluorescence intensities with reference to calibration curves.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1997Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Assignee: Novartis CorporationInventors: Alex Alder, Steven Barnard, Joseph Berger, Nils Blom, Marizel Rouilly

Patent number: 5206388Abstract: The reaction of 5,6,11,12-tetrachlorotetracene with thiourea and sulfur in a polar aprotic solvent yields 5,6,11,12-tetrathiotetracene in high yield and purity. This compound is an electron donor for forming electrically conductive radical cation salts with electron donors.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1992Date of Patent: April 27, 1993Assignee: Ciba-Geigy CorporationInventor: Alex Alder

Patent number: 4990232Abstract: The photooxidation of N,N'-substituted thioureas with oxygen in the presence of an acid-trapping agent gives N,N'-substituted carbodiimides. The carbodiimides can be converted into cyanoguanidines, which are suitable as latent curing agents for epoxy resins.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1988Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Assignee: Ciba-Geigy CorporationInventor: Alex Alder
