    Abstract: This invention involves pyrolysis of feedstock by introducing carbonaceous feedstock, into a hopper and moving it into a reactor tube enclosed in an oven, generating heat within the oven that is in part transferred to the feedstock, heating it to sufficient temperature to pyrolyze the feedstock into useful volatiles and char. A Venturi system produces a negative pressure directing volatiles into a pyro-gas oven producing heat necessary for pyrolysis and generating useful excess heat. The extruded pyrolysis char has uses including charcoal fuel, soil amendments, and activated charcoal while liquids can be produced for processing into fuels. Excess heat may be used to heat water, steam, and air, may be used in air heating and cooling systems, perform mechanical work with a Stirling engine or generate electricity on the order of 100 kW and higher. The system may be operated in a carbon neutral or even carbon negative manner, allowing sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The systems of the subject invention utilize a unique design whereby heat from a combustion chamber is used to directly gasify or liquefy biomass. In a preferred embodiment, the biomass is moved through a reactor tube in which all the gasification and/or liquefaction takes place. Preferably, char exits the biomass reactor tube and enters the combustion chamber where the char serves as fuel for combustion. The combustion chamber partially surrounds the reactor tube and is in direct thermal contact with the reactor tube such that heat from the combustion chamber passes through the reactor wall and directly heats the biomass within the reactor tube.

    Abstract: A coal-gas fuel composition, for use in furnaces and boilers which have been converted from oil or coal to natural gas, an apparatus and a method for burning said composition are disclosed. Conversions of oil or coal designed boilers to natural gas for environmental compliance can lead to an inbalance between radiative and convective heat transfer in the boiler. Co-firing natural gas with specially processed coal slurries can enhance the infrared radiation from the natural gas flame and help restore the balance intended in the original boiler design, without greatly decreasing the environmental performance of the boiler or furnace. Disclosed is a fuel composition comprising optimal ranges and proportions of constituent fuels, including a slurry comprising about 35% micronized additive, such as coal, and 65% No. 2 fuel oil.

    Abstract: A fuel composition for co-combustion with natural gas in a furnace having a radiant energy zone and a convective energy zone comprising a slurry of micronized coal in No. 2 fuel oil, the ratio of coal to fuel oil being such that the co-combustion with natural gas enhances the flame radiance of the natural gas flame in the infrared wavelength range between 1 micron to 10 microns to increase the amount of energy provided to the radiant energy zone of the furnace and reducing the energy to the convective energy zone.

In some cases even the resultant coal ash can be modified by injecting a powdered catalyst or phosphate slimes into the flame to produce a fertilizer ash having desirable minerals to enhance the economic value thereof.Basically all embodiments include a swirling coal-air mixture directed along a path to form a sheath and a swirling gas-air mixture internally thereof with the swirling of the latter being in the same direction and fortifying the motion of the former. A gas-air mixture, swirling or non-swirling, may be supplied outwardly of such sheath to enhance the more complete burning of the coal-air mixture.
